i once forget to get out of 4H after a nice easy trail run and drove home on the freeway approx 45 miles to get back home. i stopped at a starbuck on the way and noticed some binding as i was trying to fit into a parking spot

Okay so you didn't blow up your t-case by driving in 4wd on pavement. Regardless something has to give. Usually it's the tires. Could be your t-case, could be a diff, could be a u-joint, could be a yoke, could be anything. That's why it's unadvisable to drive in 4wd on pavement. Doesn't mean you're going to damage something but it's possible.

Theres also a little slack between all the mechanical connections and the tires so you do get a little give before you start binding things fwiw.

That link does mention one more thing, even if going straight slight tire differences could create a difference in speed which would cause binding. (back to the differential action and tire differences incurring wear on spiders and cross and carrier but with no differential action we get binding)

 

IIRC you can't take it out of 4wd with diff engaged, due to computer.

I'd imagine you could leave the locker engaged, unless Toyota has some switch that auto disengages the factory locker when taken out of 4wd, I'm just really not sure. So then technically I think disengaging a locker at speed should be fine as long as you're not putting a huge strain on the locker (like going around a corner locked), at least I think so, but I wouldn't think toyota would have it auto disengage just in case, but I'm really not sure.

Well then your tires were able to slip, it's not so much the speed as it is the binding. Though I'd imagine high speed would froth the oil and build up a lot of heat breaking down the additives in the gear oil sooner. Syn obviously excels there. I don't think it's really an issue anyway but just threw that out there for arguments sake.
