Winter, in 4WD pulling snowmobile trailer, average about 17 mpg
Summer, so far getting 22 mostly highway
    Highway road trip +/-24
Also have 6speed and don't mind babing it ever once and awhile, this is also between 6,000 and 8,000 ft of elevation, theoretically less air = less fuel side affect less power

My '09 access cab V6 4wd w/6 spd trans got 16.4 the very first time I checked with 320 miles on it. 2nd time I checked with 852 miles it got a hair over 17 mpg but using 89 mid grade octane gas. Don't know if the gain was due to getting broke in a little more or the gas. From reading some of thes other guys posts it seems I am actually lucky to be getting the mileage I am getting.

There are apparently two things that affect the mileage the most on this truck. The first is the better mileage is with the auto trans. Accounts for 2 to 5 mpg worse with the 6 spd manual. Second is driving habits...driving for mileage rather than aggressively makes a lot more mpg gains than less-restrictive air filters and exhaust. This assuming we are talking about the 4.0l V6, not the 2.7l I4 engine.

I prefer the manual trans but the cost to drive the manual is substantial. It hurts to see that the full-size Tundra with a 5.7l V8 gets the same or better mileage than a smaller truck with a smaller engine. Although a Tundra fully loaded will also cost almost twice what a Tacoma does... So the bottom line is the fact that these trucks generally do not get good gas mileage, unless talking about the 4-cyl engine. If the truck fits what a person needs it to do then it's OK. Problem is what happens when gas goes in price to where it should really be selling for? (Because to date we still have a federal govt that refuses to allow developing our domestic resources) the day will come when gas goes way over $4 a gallon. Then we all will need to justify what we drive because every fill-up will reinforce the truth.

The real solution for mpg with the 4.0l V6 would be to get the revs down to about 1500 on the highway at 70 mph. I will be actively researching on how to go about doing that. The truck is awesome and fits me for what I like and need it to do with this one exception: it gets really crappy gas mileage and unfortunately that is the one thing that really drives up the cost-per-mile to own and operate the vehicle.

I've put 5,000 miles on my double cab 4X4. I drive it daily to work; 35 mile each way. While it's not city driving, it's not highway either. 25 miles is back roads with 3 lights and an average speed of 40MPH when moving. The last 10 miles is highway at 60MPH. I've averaged a solid 21 MPG since I bought the truck. This includes weekend city driving. Needless to say I'm very pleased.

Start drafting and going into neutral whenever you can. My best possible mileage is archived at 60mph in 6th gear. And I almost always draft. Not real close. But about 3 car leangths back. Helps a lot.

You're more than welcome to click on my Fuelly signature and see for yourself, if it will allow you to see my fuel-ups. Alot of it has to do with how aggressively you drive, whether the road is level without hills, and whether you're stopping alot. Most of my driving is at night when I'm headed to work with little traffic.
I find it odd that I get worse mileage on highway trips/tanks, but that has been my experience.

I consistently get 21 with ethanol fuel, but that is almost all hwy. I have about a 86 mile round trip commute each day and that is in a 2013 sport DCSB 4x4. I put the cruise on 70 and try not to go above that. If I slow it down to 65 I can get 22. Factory tires and suspension for now...

TRD OR on 32" Duratracs and a mild 2.5" lift 90% city driving Fuelly.com says 15mpg avg. A lot better than 10mpg on 93 octane on my old Ram.

I'm getting about 17 in town in the summer and 14-15 in winter. As far as highway goes I really haven't taken it on a good road trip yet. I'm hoping to soon though!
