Necessary to plug rear differential?

Is it necessary to plug the rear differential fill hole to let the fluid run down the axle shafts? I just did mine: I filled it. When I started seeping I walked away for about 5 minutes. Came back and filled it again. It seeped. I left for like an additional 5 minutes and when I came back it was at a VERY slow run coming out the fill hole. Is this fine? I didn't plug the fill hole after each time either....

 

how many quarts of gear oil did you use...anything over 3 quarts is too much.

 

I got it on perfectly level ground and just filled it up to the fill plug. I heard from others that-that was all I needed to do. I don't measure cause it's never right cause I make such a mess doing everything.

 

if you filled the diff up to the fill hole with gear oil then you did it correctly
