The bed has notches on each side where you can cut a 2x6 and place it accross both front and rear of the wheel wells so plywood fits flat.
If memory serves Toyota calls it the two tier system.

Or just across the front notches and over the tailgate , then you don't have to worry about them sliding out the back .

    Im getting there......
^^^ This is true for plywood...I frequently haul a lot of building materials in the back of my short bed and its fine. That said I do toy with the idea of trading my DCSB off-road for DCLB sport. Definitely get a double cab as 4 adults fit comfortably and there is plenty of safe interior storage space when you are transporting less people (like a sedan vs a sports car). I do off road a fair amount and to be honest the locker is nice but not necessary it would be worth adding one to a long bed sport if you really wanted it to excel off road (Thats probably what I will do next time around). The short bed isn't bad but be warned... it is a bit of a pain carrying some things. For example if you bike most large mountain and road bikes won't fit without the tailgate down (if you want to keep both wheels on). Similarly I am 6'3" and my skis (182cm) won't fit in the bed straight and only barely fit in corner to corner). You can work around it and I am pleased to do so but it does take extra effort

I have the DCSB with a 1 foot tool box in the back making my bed only 4 feet long. I am still able to fit a full size bike in the back with the tailgate down

    On going
I have a 2010 sport and unless you plan on going hard core off road why would you need a locker mine has served me well so far. I also have 3 teens that ride in the back seat no problem

You know that is a valid point. My 99 Tacoma with open diffs has served me well. I think I might be happier with the room of the DC inside and the long bed.

Thought I would point out that the lumber you have in the bed isn't on the headache rack, haha;)

I have the DCSB sport, and I really like it. That said, if the manual transmission came in a LB. I would have taken that in a heart beat. I like the interior room and storage in the double cab, and the back seat is fine for short trips. I don't have any kids though. As for the back, I would prefer the long bed just because I think that a 5 foot bed isn't "trucky" enough. I think that the SB looks squashed, but it looks ok with a canopy.

May be off topic, but does the extra weight of the DC and better balance with the SB help performance in the snow?

How do you figure the shorter wheelbase will help you on snow ?
