Ignition problem tacoma 06

This is my first post in these forums so please excuse me if I posted in the wrong place. I've been having a problem with my 2006 V6 tacoma for the past 2 weeks. When trying to start the engine, sometimes I hear a clicking sound(Like when the battery is dead) and it does not turn over, sometimes it turns over slower than usual and sometimes it just starts normally. I checked the battery and it's properly charged. I'm thinking it's probably a bad starter, does anyone have any other ideas or tests I should probably do before I go out and get a new starter? Any thoughts would be deeply appreciated

Sounds like a bad battery. Try to jump start it and see what happens.

 

With no load, even a bad battery can appear to be fully charged. Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals and have someone else turn the engine over. If the battery is bad, the voltage will drop significantly. A proper battery load tester is the best way to determine.

 

This morning it would not start. I just heard a clicking sound when I turned the key. I hit the starter a few times to check if it would turn. And finally it did. I got a new one and replaced it thos afternoon. No more problems so far.

 

An '06 with the original battery ? I'd say battery.

 

Very typical.... Almost surely the battery...or possibly dirty battery terminals... or both.

 

My '06 acted up in '08....dirty terminals from the start.... Cleaned them real good, covered them with grease....no more problems...

You'll note that those terminal connactions DO NOT have much surface area touching the battery.....that's the issue here, I think.

I had already cleaned the battery terminals, the battery is only six months old, practically new. The starter was dead and ended up replacing it.
