Optima yellow top

I have a optima yellow top battery and was playing my radio for about 3hrs or a little more and truck wouldn't start.

Is that about correct with yellow top optima batteries. Just wondering cause my friend jump start me and all seems well.

So don't drink beers and just let the radio play. Lmao

Great article, on how the battery is designed to work.

Deep cycle is designed to provide low amperage draw over long periods of time. Turning over a vehicle engine, especially after three hours of depletion, is a very high amperage draw. That is why after a quick jump start everything seemed to work fine because the jump vehicle provided the extra amperage that the deep cycle couldn't.

I always questioned why people went with a yellow top on their dd.

Yes but the red top is more appropriate. Still mean, more cca, and would have started your truck after 3 hours of music. Deep cycles are for things like forklifts and golf carts.

Time to revive an old thread! A yellow top is not a deep cycle battery. It is a hybrid between a deep cycle and a cranking battery. The blue top is the deep cycle battery. A yellow top is perfect for a truck that needs to be cranked, but also run things with the truck off like lights, radio, or winch. Once a red top is depleted, it is pretty much junk

I agree. I had a yellow top in my 97 tacoma that we repetitively played hours of music on through the stereo. That battery was going on 7 years and never failed me once.

My battery is on it's way out, and I want one bad but they're expensive. And I see the reviews of them aren't great since they changed owners. Their quality control went down

When I first started working on all things automotive Optima was the best name. I have no idea what happened to them in recent years but search the web lots of threads about how they're junk now.

Want a top notch battery and don't mind spending money to get it?
