You must give the transponder chip inside the key a second to relay to the computer that your truck isn't being stolen. Once I started doing this, my truck has never had this problem again....

Maybe it's that "hard to ignite" 93 octane?! I'd doubt it, but if you start to think about it, well, put some 87 in there and see what happens! Not like the 93 does anything extra for you except deplete your funds sooner - IMO. In temps like 16 degrees, I doubt detonation/knock is an issue at all.

In stupid people terms, you put it to "on" (engage fuel pump and electronics) and then crank right?

That seemed to stop mine some too

Mine has done that a couple times. But IMO it's my own user error ... killing the starter too quick. Then you sort of have a flooding situation going on, which is why the 2nd crank then takes so long to catch.

That isn't necessary. All I have ever done is put the key in the ignition, pause, then start. Not one starting issue since I started doing this. I really think Toyota should do a better job educating owners.

    ^^This

Don't know if it applies to the brand new trucks. Mine has done it one time. Never had it reflashed, have drive 15K since and has not reoccured. The one time it happened I turned the key straight from ACC to start without pausing. It cranked for 15 seconds with no sign of life at all. Cycled the key off, then on and paused a few seconds, turned to start and fired right up.

I got it fixed when my 07 had 166 miles on it. After they recalibrated the ecm it's started right up ever since...no need to pause or anything.

I'm kinda thinkin the 93 might have something to do with it as well. 93 is pointless in these trucks... but, on the other hand, my truck does this once every 2 months or so, so IDK.

Let me make sure I have it straight:

The OP is displeased that his truck started, correct?

Incorrect. The ECU can take advantage of consistent higher-octane fuel fills.

What?? Re-read my post and you might get it. ;)

    Anywho...

I'm going to try going with 87 octane next fill-up and see if there is any change in MPGs/behavior/performance. It sounds like there may be drain-back issues in the fuel delivery system, so from now on I will pause after clicking the key to "on" and see if the problem recurs.

Thing is, I've been driving fuel-injected vehicles for many years (my last truck was also a Taco, 2010, 2.7l), and have never seen behavior like this. Sadly, it's nice to know I'm not the only one :confused:

There was a thread about this not too long ago. I've started turning my key to "on" then pausing for a second before starting. Fires up every time. I have a V6 as well. 25,000 on the clock.

Get used to it because more and more vehicles equipped with computers to maximize fuel economy and performance will do this in the future (until manufacturers find a better way). Consistency (fuel, air filter, oil weight, etc) is one way to reduce this behavior, but you'll likely never entirely eliminate it since the computer is constantly making adjustments (to compensate for environment, air pressure, moisture, fuel quality, etc).

This same thing happened on my '09 v6 and has happened once on the new '12 v6. From what ive read this is normal.

It never happened on our reg cab 4cyl 4x4. I'm thinking its just the v6 that has this issue.
