Ball hitch in rear bumper?

Hi I purchased a 2012 base access cab and realized that there is no recovery point on the rear. I see that there is a spot on the bumper for a ball hitch. Anyone know what size I would need? Does anyone make a dring that would be big enough to fit back there?

Not wanting to tow anything just want a point to hook onto in case of getting stuck in mud or a ditch. Do they all have the same side base then?

dont use the factory stock bumper with a d ring for a recovery point. i would not even pull a trailer with the stock bumper. id recommend buying a reciever style hitch and getting a shackle for that. theres a member on here who sells what you are looking for that works for a reciever style.

x2. the bumper would bend and or rip off trying to pull the truck out of a ditch or mud hole.

on 2nd note is it even rated to tow, what the truck even weighs?!?? not sure if is.

edit: idk even know what the bumper is rated for(nor to i really care i have tow package) or what the truck weighs!

Agreed. the rear bumper isnt exactly a strong point. I think its suppose to be rated for 5000 pounds but a hitch is both easy to install and fairly inexpensive. I also considered it to pull people out of snow drift but I dont want to tweak or twist my bumper.

a reciever style hitch im guessing would cost a couple hundred depending where you go. curt, reese, hidden hitch are just a couple places that make the hitches. toyota might have there own or use an outside company not sure. mine is a reese and i have hooked things to it that the truck should not have ever pulled and never had a minutes trouble with it.

You can even find a factory hitch here in the 2nd gen Marketplace from time to time. People swap out the stock rear bumper and don't need the factory hitch anymore. I got one last year for about $150 and naturally, it dropped right in. Plus, it was a Class IV not a III like a lot of the less expensive aftermarket ones are.

If you "choose" to do it by your bumper I would suggest for you to go on Youtube and see what happens when you tow with a bumper. Something plastic that is made to bend by something that is pulling it with some force isn't going to turn out to be good. Also if the bumper comes off anything attached to it could potentially become a projectile to anything around it, including the vehicle towing it.

I believe they are rated 3500# There is a fairly heavy bar inside of the bumper and the factory hitch is bolted to the rear bumper along with the frame still if you are really stuck it's probably not one of the better places to be towed out from. Some one with 2 tons of truck and a running start can place a lot of force on your rear bumper watched a guy rip the rear spring shakke out of a Dodge truck one day doing just that.

the bumper is rated for 3,500#s thats pretty good for mild wheeling. People are suggesting putting on a trailer hitch which is retarded advice for offroad recovery. why reduce departure angles

Either use a dring in the rear or get an aftermarket bumper for recovery and add to the departure angle.

the stock bumper is pretty tough in the middle. the sheet metal on the outside sucks but the center structure is tough and it uses the same mount points as the trailer hitch

I just wouldn't want to come back here on the board and read a post from the OP saying that he fudge his bumper for taking the one person advice who is telling him to do it. Either way it's to the OP's discretion if they want to do it or not. I just wouldn't want to see pics of them and their truck and the damage that could possibly in sue.
The reason why we are saying not to, not only save your truck but there is other ways to getting your truck out.
