New truck-Gas mileage

Picked up my new tacoma on Mon. DC,V6,AT,4x4 off road package and tow package. First tank of gas was 18.3 mpg. I'm a happy boy!

When it breaks in and you learn what it likes, 20+ is a piece of cake, especially with the auto and stock tire size.

 

Sounds good, I haven't had to fill mine up yet. Circumstances have kept me from driving mine much, still at 240 miles and 2 weeks old.

 

Congrats on the new truck. It might get better than that too. My '10 was in the 18's when I bought it, but now averages nearly 20. ...and I tend to drive 'briskly'.

 

Wow, I hope so. Got my 2011 on Halloween of '11, I've come close to 20mpg, but not yet.

Reading other threads, I've switched to 93 octane but haven't noticed much improvement in mpg's yet, it's peppier though.

 

what the hell am I doing wrong.... a year and a half with about 32k on the odo and i get all jolly if i get anything a decimal over 18mph and I do ALL highway.. on premium

Idk about that...I can honestly say my DCSB TRD Off Road gets an average of 16.9MPG with everything stock. If I baby it, I might get 18. When it was new, I was averaging between 18-19. Winter gas took its toll. Now I can't get above 17.5 to save my life...

Only modification is that there's all terrains instead of rugged trails now...same size...

Anything above 65 drinks gas...blah...blah...I'm sure you've heard it..

 

I should retract my previous post...I did notice the 1-2mpg drop when the TRD exhaust was installed? I tend to forget about that because that's about the time winter gas comes...

 

fully aware of that, been a tech for Honda and now BMW all my life. I commute about 30 miles one maybe 6 of those is city rest is all NJ tnpk and pkwy I have even tried crusie control for a week at 60 and the most I hit was 18.6

I feel your pain...my high is 19.1 - closest after that is 18.2.

 

Enjoy it while it lasts. My 07 AC/V6/Auto started at 21 (non-oxygenated) and is down to 17 (winter oxygenated) after 85k miles. That is 80% open highway. Really, an F150 would do this well and it's a far more rugged truck with a tailgate that won't bend when an ice chest is placed on it.

 

In the summer I got up above 20 3-4 times. Now in the winter I'm back down to 18-19.

Just a thought though, I wonder if there is a difference from the sport wheels/tires to the off road wheels/tires? I figure the BFG's have got to be a little heavier than the Dunlops or Bridgestones.

Recently- a tank with 200 miles with the cruise at 70 mph (a roaring 2700 rpm on my 6spd), the rest at 55mph, filled at 341 miles and averaged 19.5. Winter gas, outside temperature stayed below freezing for 90% of it.

The OP has the advantage of the auto, though the disadvantage of the DC. Some around here have gotten high 20s with that tranny in the summertime. I'm a bit jealous, though I like having a stick.

I'm curious why 18.3 makes a happy boy and what prior vehicle brought on that sentiment. I was the opposite, the third to last tank of my previous vehicle was 47.9 mpg. 19 mpg was hard to stomach at first, not financially but more my ego more than anything.

 

Auto v6 DCSB 2012 TRD Sport Upgrade with 1400 miles here...14.3 last tank and 15.8 the tank before...all city driving, driving fairly conservative. I'm not particularly thrilled, but hopefully it gets better as it gets broken in and I figure out how it likes to be driven.

 

2011 Double Cab TRD Off Road V6 Auto.......mostly easy city driving......average between 14-15 per tank. 1190 miles on it. Its a truck

 

Put 35 pounds of air in your tires and try (beleve it or not) switching to regular gas for a few tanks. The engine will not explode.
