well i got the tailgate reinforced today. used angle iron and some time and the gate is now a tank. probably 15lbs heavier but i dont have to worry about the bending!

the damn gate was already bent in a minor spot, bent it back out and installed the peices to support it. spent 48 bucks on total and now i got a good deal. ill upload pics when i get a chance.

also the gate is flimsy as hell. i can see why people are pissed about it. i could take my hand barely push it and it when bend down or up depending on which i went. thats some crap that toyota has pulled. but im good now.

I did my 2010 tailgate a few weeks back using the angle iron. Made a huge difference. I needed to clean the tailgate out anyway--had a bunch of pea gravel stuck in it from a load my son-in-law hauled (he did not cover the latches when taking the gravel out!) I don't know if the stock tailgate is any "stronger" or not. I do know it's not heavy duty and I'm very glad I did the mod!!:) Only took about 2 hrs max.

If the 2010 tailgates are "reinforced" I'd hate to see the earlier model ones that aren't! It looks pretty wimpy in there when I installed my Pop n Lock. Reinforcing the reinforced tailgate is on the to do list.

theres no way i could trust my tailgate before i put angle iron in it. it was flimsy as hell. i could literaly bend the support easily with my hand. keep in mind mines a 2010 as well.

toyota tail gates have been like this forever, the only strong one I ever had was a 4runner because it had a giant motor inside for the power rear window.

The one negative about my 2012 is the cheap tailgate.

Well what really pisses me off is that my 2000 tundra tailgate was a beast. I jumped on it, loaded everything under the sun on it and it never bent. I get a new taco and i got do work to it to make it work. Maybe buying older trucks is the way to go to get quality
