So since I bought this truck in November of last year these pesky bed bolts have been bothering me. Its a 2010...I don't want rust! The whole bed is black and those damn rusty covered bolts just stuck out too much. Took them to the dealership to see if I could get them replaced but it was just “surface rust”. Keep in mind I plan on putting a bed mat in but I didn’t want to just mask a problem.

So for a little under 15 bucks, 2 hours of time and a few beers this was all done a few hours before Super Bowl kick-off.

    Needed:
    -Masking tape
    -wire brush
    -wax paper
    -3M Coarse sponge for metal
    -Black High Performance rust-oleum
    -Clear rust-oleum

First step- take that 3M coarse sponge and go to town on the bolts. I switched back and forth from the wire brush but saw better results with the 3M.

    Before:

    After:

I was impressed with how easy that was....so I paused and had a cold one.

Second step- tape up 6 bolts and enjoy another cold one. Tear up some wax paper to put around the tape for added protection. (You can actually slide the tape under the bolt). I didn't have any of the blue tape one would normally use for painting so I just grabed masking tape. Keep in mind I am putting a bed mat in so the little paint that got through the tape doesn't bother me.

Second step- blast them with black rust-oleum….and drink another cold one. I went back over them with 3 coats.

Third step- blast them with clear rust-oleum and wait for them to dry

Fourth step- peel off tape and wax paper and step back and enjoy this cheap fix....while cosuming another cold one.

I like your style. We need to take them out and put some d rings in for you. I added 4 in mine. I'll be back before cinco de mayo so I'll have to supervise with said cold beverages!

Well XD40SC, this was a killer thread and since I live in the wonderful land of Florida, this had to be done on my truck. Followed your directions to a "T" minus the beer part. I cant explain drinking at 11am and yea yea, I know, its 5 o'clock somewhere. But here are my results...thanks so much!!

Get that bed mat! You won't regret it! The cheapskate in me cringed at spending almost $100 on a rubber mat, but it looks so nice and makes the bed so much more usable.

Did that but paint won't hold up long if you put much in the bed.

I did this when I put in D-rings. When each bolt came out it went to the vise and got wire wheeled, then painted, and I painted and then put anti-seize on the entire bolt.

    Hey all,
Just purchased a used 2011 TT, and would like to replace rather than clean up the existing mega-rusted bed bolts. Anyone know if there’s a stainless steel alternative? Many thanx, giuzeppe

    More than I can afford
I took mine out and let them stew in Evaporust overnight.

Good as new. That stuff is magic.

Not sure, but I do know the OEM replacements for these bed bolts, including the tie down D-ring bolts, are not cheap. Normally I don't waste my time trying to salvage rusty & aged fasteners as it's easier/cheaper just to replace, but this thread has me now inspired to finally refinish my rusty D-ring bolts since they're (obviously) not covered by the bed mat.

Thanx burrito782! Haven't done a ton of research, but there's gotta be a SS replace alt for those bolts. I'll get some time over the holidays to research and, if you're interested, let you know what I come up with. Happy Holidays, JC

You don’t want stainless steel for this as they won’t have the same strength as a grade 8 bolt.

I don't get the "why" part. First time you scrape it with a shovel it will be back to ugly.
