I have noticed 2 paint chips on the hood of my new tacoma. They are small, as if a rock had hit the hood and chipped the paint but i have not seen or heard any rock hitting the hood (i am the only one who has driven it and its 1 month old). These 2 chips have come within a week of each other. I owned my first gen for 11 years and never had a paint chip due to a rock or anything. Is it possible that something was done wrong when painting that is causing it to chip easily or am i just have some bad luck?

I've got two rock chips on my hood as well....and a few on the windshield too. It sucks, but it happens.

i think it's just bad luck. first thing i did was put a bugflector on my truck when it came home from the dealer. the looks are debateable, and doesn't mean i can't get a rock chip, but it does lessen the possibility.

by the way OP, when touching up those chips, I HIGHLY recommend this paint method:

    http://drcolorchip.com/

i've used it on several of my past vehicles and the chips literally just disappear. it doesn't leave that "blob" of paint that the normal touch up products do, the additional chemical step they add smooths the paint out to where it just blends in with the rest of the paint. in fact, i have to order some for my new taco.

From what I've read on other forums etc... people are saying today's new paint is actually less durable/chip prone -- due to changes in paint & clear coat formulas to meet today's strict environmental regulations.

Good job tree huggers. Making my trucks paint chip off sooner and rusting faster so it will go to the junk yard sooner and I have to buy another one sooner. Good job.

I've never heard of a truck going to a junk yard over chipped paint.

If that were the case, mine would have been gone a long time ago.

Paints, just like this economy, have gone to shit. I have been a paint correction specialist and detailer for quite some time now, and it's funny to see how worse the paint has gotten right from the factory. I have gotten more "new car preps" in the past year then I have in the 5 before that. The only brand that has seemed to stay the same or get better is Audi. Audi and it's bigger brother Bentley have stayed great over the years and have still have shown the best paint work I have seen. almost ZERO orange peel and the finish is flawless after the "detailers" get to it at the factory.

But back to your Toyota, my 2012 has 2-3 chips as well, I just believe it's from following too closely to the person ahead or who knows. The paint on my '12 seems to be pretty durable.

a lot of paint companies are starting/have-been-using water based paints... they are not very durable... but safer for the enviro:rolleyes:

Mine chipped on the hood within 30 minutes of leaving the dealership. Not only did it chip the paint, the rock bounced off the hood and chipped my windsheild. Shit SUCKS!

Paint on these trucks is super thin and chips very easily. The new water based paints suck badly. My brother is a painter at a body shop and says that all the new cars have terrible paint and his shop is making a lot of money from re-paints and touch-up on new cars.

I agree...my Q7's paint is immaculate and holds up well to pretty much any environment...my taco on the other hand has chips...scratches...chipped windshield.....and that was in the first week. Most factory paints do suck nowadays.
I suggest you get a 6 pack, go to your local body shop and become best friends with him or her over the next year and get a discount on the paint job when the time comes.

Tell Toyota we have 3yrs 36k miles on paint. I'm in The middle of a claim on my 2013 now. 7500 miles looks like it has 300k miles on it. That's bs, trucks tough as nails, except the paint. Paint quality on mine is GARBAGE, guess that's what I get having bought one painted in Tijuana Mexico. But regardless take to your dealer ask for service manager to look at it and file a case report with Toyota, the regional coordinator is the one who makes the decision to repair it or not. Their typically very nice people the higher up in Toyota u get. Don't forget! 3yrs 36k!!!

Chips are gonna happen if you don't protect your front end with a mask, 3M Clearbra . . .

No matter what vehicle you own, you're gonna get chips on the front end if you don't protect it somehow.

Put a mask on it or the 3M and they pretty much disappear.
