There must be some other options out there for 2nd Gens. I did a search and this was the ONLY thread I found for a modified or auxiliary fuel tank! I need more capacity and I am tired of having my plastic gas cans flopping around in the bed. Are there any other options for us? I just wish I had an extra 10 gallons.

Ya... 42 gallons in my '95 Suburban. It was a beast but it was still good for 600 miles.

    35 gallons in a Taco 2.7 2wd would be good for 800+!

I agree with the weight distribution issue. At 6 pounds per gallon of gasoline, that equates to 210 pounds of weight on the left side of the truck. You think taco-lean is bad now? SHESH! That Tacoma is going to look like it has a drop kit installed on one side and a lift kit on the other!

I am also curious. I did read on the expedition portal that it was an extra 65# not 85#. Either way I'd be curious as to what additional changes need to be made to complete the project. Personally I'd love an LRA. I really dislike the current range limitation.

The fuel in a full 20 gal factory tank should weigh 120 lbs. The fuel in a full 35 gal tank should weigh 210 lbs, so 90 extra lbs just for fuel. The factory tank is some form of plastic, the aftermarket tank is steel. That has to add at least 200 lbs to the vehicles weight. In a vehicle with about 1000-1200 lbs cargo capacity that is a lot of added weight.

I do like a larger tank. My F-150 has a 36 gal tank, but the trucks suspension was designed for it. I get the same fuel mileage as my Tacoma and it is great to fill up when I want to and at good prices instead of when I have to. But on a Tacoma I see more negatives than positives.

I've looked at this as well. It is tempting, but the Taco lean it would cause with the extra weight.

    Holy thread revival

Even with all the negatives I still want this. I have already built my suspension up to handle extra weight as my rig is used as an Overland style and already has well over 1000 extra lbs on it.

Overland build is my target goal and I would love to figure out how to add the extra fuel and build the suspension to support that weight in addition to the extras for long travel off road away from people. :)

If doing so, I'd look at adding an extra leaf from say the largest leaf on the 3 leaf progressive AAL to the driver side only to appropriately acount for the weight difference. And then adjust from there.

Ideally, someone would make an auxiliary tank that would fit in the spare tire location, since most folks can't use that area anyway. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening with the new Tacoma (3rd gen) being out.

I've thought about this also. It would also help balance out the additional weight. With the advancements in 3D printing I would say nothing is out of the realm of possibility. Once a prototype is created it can be be made into a mold so a better material can be used to cast it.

So I reached out to LRA sales in AU...
Cost is $1200 AU ($918.10) USD
With Shipping ($1749.0) AUD ($1299.61) USD
    Part Number TTACDCR
    Tank Type Replacement
    Exhaust STANDARD
Location LH Side of Drive Shaft
    Fill Point STANDARD
    Capacity 129 Litres (~34 Gal)
    Relocate Spare NO
    Vehicle Notes
Only suit Short Bed Model - EXPORT
    42kg (92.5lbs) empty I think I saw. Shipping wt is 46kg

    if it is 92.5 lbs
1 gallon of gas weighs about 6.183 lbs
    Holds 34 gallons
that would be 210.2 lbs +92.5 for the tank = ~302.7lbs. (forgive me if my math is a little off)

Standard tank is 21.1 gal and weighs ~40 lbs.
21.1 gallons would be 139.26 totaling about 179.
The difference in weight is roughly 124 lbs. ... doesn't seem like it should add that much "taco lean" when looking at the difference.

This was the quote from the sales guy...
" The extra weight is insignificant in a vehicle of that size. No suspension modification is necessary."

    Couple other options:
    TransferFlow
Duramax Option (would not quite double but hey its more range with a convenient spout. With Prime, shipping is free ;) )
If nothing else will work... there is this: Sigh
