    Hey guys,
Question - Every time I start my truck in the morning, my RPMs jump and stay steady at 1200 RPMs when its still in park. It will not level back to 800-900 until I put it in drive. Happens also in evening when I leave work and truck has been parked for 9 hours. Temp is around 55 degrees in morning.

Is this normal and does this happen to anyone else?

    TY

No money, all went to truck...
My 4runner used to do this and it was normal. Would rev a little high and then settle down when warm.

Is it supposed to be idling at 1200? Mine starts up at 1500 and drops to about 1100 or 1000 when I throw it in D.

It should idle above normal speed until pre-spec parameters are met. Usually your thermostat temp needs to be met, certain amount of time elapsed, or 02 sensors warm up. Then you go into closed loop which utilizes the 02's & MAF to keep you near stoichiometric 14.7:1 A/F.

Wow, you know your stuff. Thanks guys for the response. It appears that the truck was engineered this way which is good to know.

Every vehicle is engineered this way. It is warming up the cat, and pumping the cat full of air also so that it may convert co-co2 and hc-h2o. Ya, it has a secondary air pump to help do it too. :)
