I know, I know, A-TRAC has been beaten to death and the last thread got the profanity going, but I’ve had 5 Toyota pick-ups (and Jeeps and Isuzus) and the last one was a 2009 4X4 SR5 4 cyl. and so did not have ATRAC or the locker. I’m a geoarchaeologist and use my vehicle in the field extensively in the North American Southwest, particularly New Mexico and have gotten into some pretty hairy places over the last 30 years, and bought the 2012 TRD OR 4.0L 6 speed, because of what I’d read about the various options for traction.

I just got back from a couple of days with NMSU students in western New Mexico. This is a rugged volcanic landscape that some of the New Mexicans have probably traveled through. I had about 1/2 day to experiment with the 2012, so I found some challenging, rocky trails with some 3+ foot drops and lots of boulders. I used low range with locker against A-TRAC on the same trail and you know that A-TRAC is amazing. I never heard tires scraping and one of the front or rears was up in the air at times. With A-TRAC, locker, and low range, David K is right, I don't think you could get stuck anywhere even if high centered on one end. I’d like to experiment getting one side down into a deep rut and then see if with the locker and A-TRAC could get out – with other vehicles there just in case.

Thanks again David for the A-TRAC explanation. I feel much more comfortable out there in the field on my own.

You can't challenge the limits of the system in a stock height unarmored truck on stock tires.

This point has been made a million times. Please stop noting that A-TRAC helps navigate dirt roads. We know that.

    In before David_K/Lock.
