I was in your same shoes after buying a used 2wd trd sport. After a year I finally decided to man up and go for the 4x4. Yes it may cost 2500 more but that's only 30 bucks more a month for something you really want. Besides 4x4 Tacomas hold there value so much. I saw a dealer selling a 97 4wd Tacoma with 240000 miles for 9 grand! That's crazy!

Getting a 4wd vehicle does not constitute "manning up".

It's only 30 bucks more a month to pay for it upfront. But it's more parts to break and if you don't need them, then why risk it?

Selling any vehicle with 240K miles on it for 9 grand is crazy on it's own. Being 4wd has nothing to do with it. I think it's more about it being a toyota and reliable.

A lot of a vehicle's "capabilities" comes from the drivers ability to drive it to it's limit, and the only way to get to know the vehicle's limits is to drive it and get comfortable in it.

To the OP, I find it odd that you're judging your truck when you reached your limit before the truck reached it's limit. How do you know it isn't enough for what you need it for when all it's done so far is not get stuck?

That said, I say that if you really want the 4x4 you should get the 4x4. I really dislike having to compromise... I always wind up wishing I'd bought what I wanted the first time around.

    Op,

I live in VA, and it doesnt snow much here either. But i bought 4x4. I have always been of the thinking (its better to have and not need) especially if it comes down to getting home safely and on my own(without tow). But, instead of buying 4x4, if u dont want it or see a need for it, just buy a winch. that way, if u get stuck, u can get yourself out, without 4x4.

Get good tires, Air Down, winch up and go with a friend.

Things that all offroad enthusiast should do IMO ;)

Be happy and remember, some people wish they had a tacoma (any one of them):D

So I am currently at the dealer, hoping I might get some quick advice. They offered to swtich out my truck for a 4x4 Sr5 but the cost will be an additional $1800. They are still giving it to me $900 under invoice, but the Sr5 4x4 has a much higher invoice. The big question becomes is it worth the difference?

Also I would be paying quite a bit more and losing some of the features of the off road.

$1800 doesn't sound too bad to me; one other consideration-the re-sale down the road on a 4x4 is going to quite bit higher than a 2x2 as well

boils down to the use of your truck, if you really like off-roading- I don't think you'll be dissatisfied w/ 4x4 :)

I wouldnt, what dealer are you at? we have a couple dealer hookups here in Az. I wouldnt go with anything less than the TRD off road 4x4 if you want the same features as you have now.

I think you're confusing "invoice price" (the amount the dealer paid the factory) with "sticker price." The price stuck to the window.

Nobody sells a truck for 900 under invoice, except under very rare circumstances. (Not saying it doesn't happen, but that's not what we have here.)

"900 under sticker" is better than "900 over invoice" and wouldn't be a bad deal for someone in your shoes trying to flip a truck you've driven for a week. You don't have maximum leverage here, but that's OK; this is about getting what you want.

My advice? Try the SEATS. TRD seats are better than SR5 seats. That's the main thing you're giving up here by going from your current truck to the SR5.

Yeah, you're giving up other "off road" stuff, but you're gaining 4x4, which is "Off Road" even though it doesn't say so in cool letters on the bedsides.

Most folks on TW end up quickly upgrading the tires and suspension for off-roading pretty soon anyways; and possibly end up installing a locker as well. You can add ALL that stuff to the SR5 4x4 much easier than you can add 4X4 to the Pre-Runner off road.

It sounds like you know what you want - otherwise you wouldn't even BE at the dealer right now. They're giving you a decent deal. If you can abide the seats - I say go for it.

Rule #1 - never let a dealer tell you what you need. If you don't know, show up, test drive, then go home. They will entice you to come back. In the meantime, you can figure out what YOU want instead of letting them push what they say you need (re: what they want to sell).

Now you've really played your hand by going back after the sale. Sure, they'll do it, but it'll cost.

Why not just drive and enjoy. When you get it stuck 20 times, then consider your options. By then, the dealer will be calling you to increase their used inventory and you can get a '14. If you don't get it stuck, then enjoy the gas mileage savings!

Just drove home my 4x4 Sr5. All in all things worked out pretty well - I honestly was surprised the dealer took back the truck. I lost some optional features, but I gained the 4x4 which I really think is a necessity for me - even just if it serves as insurance against being stuck when I don't want to be. In the end I figure I can lift it, add new shocks and tires, and put on skid plates, whereas completing a solid axle swap or the like would be much more expensive and difficult down the road.

For the record I did my homework on invoice vs. msrp. I purchased the original truck for 900 below the dealer invoice and they preserved this deal for me today - so I was still well below sticker. I was shocked they went so low, they gave me essentially all of their holdback, which seems pretty rare, especially for this popular of a vehicle. The extra money I paid seems to be due to the fact that invoice for the 4x4 option is quite high (toyota has little profit on the 4x4 system itself) whereas the packages have a much lower invoice and leave a lot of room for profit.

Thanks for all of the advice and guidance. Now I need to actually use this damn expensive dial on my dash. Anyone up for a ride around phoenix?
