My truck is an 05 and I'm seeing rust here and there. Is this normal?

I'm in Colorado, and that amount of rust seems pretty normal. I don't think the paint they used on a lot of the underside is so great.

Most of my rust is not from rotting away, but rocks chip at the crap paint and expose metal. We all know what happens to exposed metal...

I have similar rust on the front of my frame and certain parts under the truck. Sand it, paint it, keep your eye on it.

Yes I bought it used at 14k and I'm the second owner. The previous owner lived in Washington as well. Maybe its because lack of care I rarely wash underneath the truck.

Trust me, as soon as these trucks see salt and road grime they will start to rust. I have rock chips on my door that are rusting, my powder coated bumper is starting to show, and every spring/early summer I crawl under my truck and grind and re-spray bedliner on everything that is showing rust.

Ohh yeah, I have an 09... Just one of the joys of living in Alberta, Canada

yeah, hence why I'm under my truck in the spring to clean it up. The amount of crap they put on the highways up here is stupid, and I did a TON of highway driving for 3 years.

My 09 has 133,XXX kms on it, which is about triple the norm.

Got rust under it. Winter salt and grime and it also doesn't help to launch boats on bad launches where you have to drive completely in the water. Just about up to the doors sometimes, flat launches suck.

Nothing rusts in Seattle cause it never stops raining long enough for the air to get at the metal

The bumpers do seem to rust a ridiculous amount. Mine was replaced thanks to an illegal alien drunk driver a month after I bought it but no rust on the replacement. The body shop manager, who weighed about 160lbs, stood the old one on end and bent it in half easily. Pathetic.

Get some POR 15. You can paint right over the rust. It actually sticks to surface rust better as long as there's no flaking. It's not cheap, but it goes a long way and it works.

Calgary uses a ton of salt, and this year they were trying a new chemical on the roads before the snow, so I can only imagine what the underside of my truck looks like...

Back on the topic from the OP, I wouldn't worry about that little bit of rust on the skid plate. They are cheap metal anyways and the best thing to do is pull it off and put on something that will actually protect.
