All those here who are rushing to give up all their freedoms for a little extra security would be singing a different tune if they knew in the near future their spouse's divorce lawyer will subpoena the records to discover where they have been (if Toyota has not yet integrated the EDR to the NAV system you can bet they will).

Why does everyone worry so much? If you don't do anything wrong who cares?

As mentioned, nothing new. If you don't like it, buy an older vehicle. I'd say disable it, but in the event of the accident that might make you look worse if they want to view the "black box data" and see that you have it disabled.

Putting aside the implications in normal accidents, with Toyota specifically, can you blame them for having this stuff? Especially after the whole unintended acceleration debacle. If it wasn't for these types of things they wouldn't have been able to tell what the driver was doing when they claimed the vehicle was unintentionally accelerating.

It's just a tool. It isn't inherently evil.

Like a spoon, pencil or gun, it depends on the user and how the tool is used.

Under Magnusson-Moss, Toyota cannot void your factory 3/36 simply because you performed your own maintenance.
Keep your receipts and document the service performed, date, and mileage.

Given the relative acceptance of these devices and decreasing costs in technology, especially data storage, it will be soon when they start logging other functions regarding blue tooth usage, lights, other items being used / not used etc.

It's interesting that this thread is kind of a fundamental liberties and politics debate really.

I'm all for freedoms and not giving an inch, look what's happened to California, especially related to gun control (that's a subject I'm well versed in so it's the first thing to come to mind) bit by bit.

There is a fundamental difference between the attitudes of US "Citizens" and Canadian "Subjects"

"Sir, where are you coming from?"
    "Easton"
    "And where are you going?"
    "Weston"
"What were you doing in Easton?"
    "Visiting a friend"
"Please step out of the car and place your hands on the roof"

    Why?

I did nothing wrong. I was just visiting a friend in Easton.
What I don't know is that a liquor store was robbed and the employee shot, and witnesses described a 6'+ tall bald male driving a white pickup truck.

Now I'm in deep shit. Bail is going to be thousands. I won't get that back... the 10% that goes to the bondsman is down the toilet.
Another $500-$5000 for towing and impound on my truck, not to mention damage caused by the towing company... I had a car towed once and the impound company left it outside in the rain with the windows down. Interior was flooded AND the seats were soaked in cat piss.

The woman who is trying to sue Toyota for the gas pedal "sudden acceleration thing" in her Lexus was found to be a scammer because the memory recordings proved she was at fault,...not the car. It's a "cover your ass" move because too many assholes out there looking for a free meal.

Its comforting to hear there are some good wise men in this forum who care about our freedom. I find it very disturbing that there are a few folks here that find humor in undermining their own privacy they obviously take for granted or just dont plain care. These are often the same folks that never question one bit of the unPatriot Act or Resident Obuma recently signing law for future Presidents the power to use our military against our own US citizens. Americas true enemy is not abroad(muslims) its indeed those of us within, primarily who are complacent or unwise.

Yikes...stereotype much? Didnʻt think Muslims were our only enemy abroad. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Smells like the guy searching his house for bugs from the government, wearing tin foil hats and meeting at local coffee shops(which are still bugged) to have meetings.

How is a Data Logger in the vehicle taking freedom away? You can still vote. Own a gun. Speak freely. Eat whatever you want, ect.

ALSO.....Driving is a privilege, not a right. Just to be clear on things, as many people think that driving on a public road is their "God given right"......which its not.....
