On my 97' Tacoma, I hauled a pallet of drywall mud to a few job sites. Each box weighed 50 lbs. and there were I think 40 boxes per pallet so I had a ton in the bed. Actually I had more because I had other material too. I would not recommend doing this often but I did do it on mine and it did just fine. My steering was a little loose and my leaf springs looked like frowny faces but the truck amazed me at it's capabilities.

Here is another few pics of some material I hauled from a material house to a job site once. This one was a fun one too.

    At the material house:

The 75-100lb per cubic foot is standard engineering calculation.
Likely worst-case, so dry soil might be lighter.

My trenching and shoring certification class also indicated 2700/yard.

If there's room in the bed, the truck is not overloaded, right?

    Yup.

I've overloaded my share of vehicles, but the only time that I really felt that I had made a dangerous mistake was when I loaded 4 bags of concrete, mortar, and sand onto the back of my motorcycle.
Now, my wife weighs almost as much as those 4 bags, but there's a big difference between a static load and a living load.

We used to take my dad's 96 Dakota to pickup topsoil all the time. We always had a "half scoop" loaded. By this calculation that would have been 1350 pounds in the bed of the truck. Judging from the trucks rated payload (slightly more than a second gen 4x4) and the resulting sagging rear end, that seems about right.

I filled a 4cyl Ranger shortbed with cases of motor oil piled up to the top of the bed rails. I have no idea how much that weighed, but I knew I'd screwed up as soon as I pulled out of the driveway.:D If I went over 35MPH, the truck would start to sway. I made it about 12 miles on the back roads like that, but I really shouldn't have.

    It's really close.

If you figure 2700/yd, you're going to be safe by installing properly rated shoring for that weight... and you have an idea how much weight is going to be on you if something goes wrong.

The yellow sticker is for accessory weight added after some particular point in the manufacturing process. It has nothing to do with "weak springs". It's just for compliance with a federal law about carrying capacity. See this thread/post.

And why does a truck have to be made somewhere other than the U.S. to have four leaves? I just bought my 12 in Cali and it has 4 and I didn't do a AAL or TSB.

The US trucks only started getting 4 leaf packs with the 2012's , the Canadian trucks have had the 4 leaf pack since 2007 .

FWIW , they are all made in the same plants

I believe only the 2012 Sports and SR5's get the 4 leaf pack , the 2012 Offroad still gets the 3 leaf pack

You are right it does not weight a ton it's around 3,000# per yard or a scoop unless it's a little loader.
