Actually in VA you can have people in your bed as long as they're 16 or older and you don't go on the highway

"§ 46.2-1156.1. Transportation of persons less than sixteen years old in pickup truck beds prohibited; exception.
No person under sixteen years of age shall be transported in the rear cargo area of any pickup truck on the highways of Virginia. The provisions of this section shall not apply to transportation of persons in the bed of any pickup truck being operated (i) as part of an organized parade authorized by the Department of Transportation or the locality in which the parade is being conducted or (ii) on or across a highway from one field or parcel of land to another field or parcel of land in connection with farming operations."

I don't see a reason to ride in the bed unless it's an emergency.

I would rather cram 4 people in the back seat before I would allow someone to ride in my bed. Ehh I'll rather take the no seat belt ticket.

When I was growing up we did but it wasn't for very long. Also my parents were driving and they weren't driving like the person in that video. It wasn't illegal then. I am not sure now if it's illegal or not. I guess if you're on your own personal probably I'd think it would be okay, not on a main roadway. Also if the person driving is driving responsibly.

When it comes to the video that was very hard to watch. Everything in the video would have been fine if the guy didn't start swerving like they did, idiot. I hope that everyone in that video turned out to be okay.

When I grew up we always rode in the back. There were no double cabs back then, and it was just standard practise for kids to ride in the back. Boys sitting in the front would have been considered nerds.
Of course I am not talking about going to church on Sunday, but driving around on and between farms/ranches, farmers picking up their kids at school and driving home from town etc.
No problem. Now, looking back at how we were sitting in the back on top of bags of cow feed stacked as high as the truck's roof, going 100 kph down a dirt road... I won't let my kids do it. But that's just the way the world is changing - my parents didn't think twice about it.

Well you already got your answer about TX but for anyone else still reading this.. Watch that video on the first page and think twice!! Even with bucket seats and seatbelts, that would have been ugly!

As kids we routinely rode without seatbelts, in pickup beds, and even tied to the luggage rack on top of the station wagon. However, those were different legal times and several of my schoolmates died in relatively minor automobile accidents too. As a paramedic I would strongly suggest that you not ride in a pickup bed. It's even dangerous for paramedics to ride unsecured in the backs of ambulances but we have to do it as part of our jobs.

Edit: Removed the Texas regulations as I just saw that several have already posted them.

Don't see why riding in a truck bed would be any more dangerous than riding in a convertable or on a motorcycle. The latter certainly doesn't have seatbelts.

In fact (rant of the day), as long as motorcycles are allowed on the roads, I think states really need to seriously lighten up on the seatbelt laws. Helmets are the only requirement for motorcycle riders, which vehicle occupants, even without seatbelts, are protected by airbags and the entire metal vehicle. Given the disparity, it is flatly unfair to ticket (points, fines, increased insurance rates, etc) vehicle drivers and occupants for not also wearing seatbelts on top of all that. Seatbelts should be a free choice, not a law.

In Florida you can ride in the bed if you're 18+.

Having worked a good many automobile wrecks, I don't much agree with that statement. It's a bitch having to tell a mother that you did all you could but her teenage daughter is dead, especially when the girl would have probably survived the accident with few injuries had she only been wearing a seat belt.

BTW, some of the new Goldwings have airbags.

That's going to happen with or without seatbelt laws. Thousands are killed on the roadways each year. Now, one could argue it might happen more often without seatbelts, but I still think seatbelts should be a choice with the emphasis placed more on safe driving and similar. After all, the ideal is to avoid an accident, not depending on a device during one.
