can you ride in the bed?

going on a trip and wanted to know if anyone knows?

Certain laws affect certain states, in Montana you can.

 

I dont believe you can in Texas.


If you go on the freeway, it will be safer to just take two cars.

How long of a trip?

I wouldn't recommend it, but as was previously stated laws probably vary from state-to-state. I see it all the time around here in CO, but it never seems like a very good idea. Obviously no one is looking to smash into you, but if someone does... The people in the bed certainly won't fare well.

V.T.C.A., Transportation Code 545.414. Riding in Open Beds; Offense
(a) A person commits an offense if the person operates an open-bed pickup truck or an open flatbed truck or draws an open flatbed trailer when a child younger than 18 years of age is occupying the bed of the truck or trailer.
(b) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $25 or more than $200.
(c) It is a defense to prosecution under this section that the person was:

(1) operating or towing the vehicle in a parade or in an emergency;
(2) operating the vehicle to transport farmworkers from one field to another field on a farm-to-market road, ranch-to-market road, or county road outside a municipality;
(3) operating the vehicle on a beach;
(4) operating a vehicle that is the only vehicle owned or operated by members of the household;
(5) or operating the vehicle in a hayride permitted by the governing body of or law enforcement agency of each county or municipality in which the hayride will occur.

(a) Compliance or noncompliance with Subsection (a) is not admissible evidence in a civil trial.
(b) In this section, "household" has the meaning assigned by Section 71.005, Family Code.

From this I would say it is legal if you the person is over 18.

 

in washington, you can as long as all the seatbelts in the cab are in use.

In idaho we would just throw a small couch in the back of the bed i think the law here is that they have to be between the cab and the wheel well.

you ca in big GA as long as you as 18+ and don't sit on the sides or the wheel wells you have to sit on the bed floor and i believe not on the interstate. its fun if your cruising around town at mild speeds some friends and i did it in his truck in downtown Savannah a few years back and hollered at girls

 

as long as the person is over 18 in texas your legal. it used to be 12
