Crap. Just bought a 2005 with 160k. Test drove it for a solid 15 minutes and the motor sounded fine afterward. Drove it home (about 30 min) and the top end is ticking. Wtf? Any ideas? Bought it "as is", so can't go to the dealer for help...

Ticking can be the VSV valve, lifters, injectors, etc.. The engine is all aluminum, which is a great sound conductor, and there is little to no sound dampening for teh engine systems. In other words.....its normal.

Mine ticks, in conjunction with an exhaust leak at the collector on my DTLT (URD ring gasket failed). My old '90 4runner had the Yota Tick for all 750k+ miles my family put on it and was still running good when we sold it to a family friend. I miss my 4runner :(

Glad to know it's normal. Was wondering the same with my 2012. Guess there are a few "normal" things I have to get use to with the Taco like the little lunge forward when at a complete stop.
