Thumbs down Burning Oil

I think my Tacoma might be dying an early death... I changed the oil and found out I lost 1.5 quarts between changes. I'll keep an eye on it weekly from now on but that seems like a lot to lose between changes. Truck is a 2007 V6 with 65k miles on it, meticulously maintained, rarely tows and spends most of it's time on pavement.

At 50k miles I switched to Mobil 1, anything think that could have something to do with it? If so, should I go back to Dino oil?

maybe that 1.5 quarts of oil is still in the oil line and passages. how hot what the truck when you chnged it.? just done running? and i think you would notice smoke.

The truck was pretty warm. I had just driven it for about an hour, it then sat for 20 minutes and I pulled the plug. I let it drain for a good 45 minutes until there was just a very slow drip coming out of the pan.

I didn't know if it would smoke burning only 1.5 quarts between changes. I don't notice the smell of burning out but because it's cold, it's blows vapor. I guess assumed it was water vapor, certainly could have been smoke... I'll be paying much closer attention from now on. This is the first oil change where I had a very noticeable drop in fluid.

7,500 miles with Mobil 1. I checked the oil around 4,000 miles to make sure everything looked good and it didn't appear to have lost any at that point and the oil still looked fresh. I know, I should check it more frequently but I got busy and didn't. I'll be checking it weekly from now on, or until I figure out what happened to the oil.

No signs of leaks, I park in the same spot at the parking garage at work, no oil spots on the ground.

I've got around 5 on mine with no oil loss. Honestly I wouldn't sweat 1 quart during that interval. 1.5 might be a bit much....maybe?

Only being back with into a Toyota for a little over a year now, I'm not sure about usage. I know GM the Vortecs would use 1 every 4K, the LS series motors use 1 about every 2-3K. My diesels always used 1 every 4K.

The fleet at work is mostly Caravans and Fords. They run 5K intervals. All use 1 quart during the interval.

I know you're asking Toyota but just trying to give you a perspective...... Might be OK.

I have heard it said, not sure if it is true, that over time, oil will create a type of seal between all the contact surfaces. Different brands of oil have different detergents in them, and changing brands of oil can break those seals down temporarily until new ones are formed.

It could be that the Mobil 1 has finished clearing out the old dino oil, and it may let some slip through in the process. If it has no visible leaks and is not smoking, I would just keep an eye on it through the next couple of oil changes and see if it slows down again.

Also, if you mainly do city driving, I have heard that fuel can slip through and make it look like your oil level is fine. A good run on the highway can burn this off and bring the oil level down quickly.

I've seen a couple threads where Toyota claims that burning under a specific amount of oil between changes is 'normal'. I tell ya what though, I've never had a vehicle burn oil before and if this one turns out that it is, I'd be hard pressed to own another Toyota anytime soon

At this point, I'm trying not to be doom and gloom, I'm going to give my engine the benefit of the doubt and watch it over the next few thousand miles. My dad and I did the last oil change so 2 people, maybe we screwed up (doubtful we didn't get a simple measurement correct but who knows, stranger things have happened). Some oil could have still been in the engine even though I let it drain for a while and I lost a tiny bit when changing the filter (my catch bottle shifted and I lost a tiny bit). If it is burning oil, there's not much I can do except make the decision to cut my losses and trade (which I absolutely do NOT want to do), I'm hoping the combination of the above is where the 1.5 qt. of oil went. This MFer can't die on my yet, I'm only at 70k miles, it should be just getting broken in

With the old synthetics, I'd read that also. If you change from dino to synthetic, it breaks down the seals and starts leaking. Then, if you changed back, it just got even worse. The newer synthetics supposedly don't have that issue and you can switch back and forth between oil changes if you really wanted to. That could be what happened, but with all the members running Mobil 1, I can't imagine my luck is THAT bad

I do a good mix of driving. Very little congested city driving but a lot of slower stop and go. Most of my driving is a 30 - 40 MPH, fairly steady paced crawl. I usually accelerate smoothly and don't punch it unless I have to. In this past oil change, I did do quite a few extended highway trips, including the one just before the oil change.

sheesh that is definitely not normal, my 180k mile 3.4L consumes about 1/16 quart over my 5000 mile intervals. Might want to do a compression test, then a leakdown test if the compression is low.

Well, I'm hoping I just did something really stupid and it's not actually losing oil. I'm really crossing my fingers that it's a steady string of consecutive brain farts It still starts, runs and drives perfectly. Hell, I'm still getting 20 MPH, haha. If I find that I'm steadily losing oil, I'll run a compression test among series of other tests.

Interesting... If I keep burning oil, I'm switching off Mobil 1. If the fuking truck is just going to burn it, I'm not wasting my money on the high dollar stuff. It's kinda like buying an infant an Ipad when a $5 cheap plastic toy with flashing lights will have the same effect. Damn truck's ungrateful

I doubt its Mobil 1 unless you had found some super waterdown version of it.
My truck is using Mobil 1 since ODO 500. ands its at 50K mark
