TRD vs. SR5

Okay so the TRD packages are more abundant at our local Toyota dealer than the SR5s. Having said that I see a lot of SR5 Tacomas. My question is, is the TRD packages more beefy than the base truck? Yes I know better shocks, and tires in most cases, but underneath where it counts, is there beefier springs, struts, axles, etc?

TRD Off Road has a locking rear differential. There are also more electronics in the TRD packages that arguably make them more off road worthy. Otherwise, the TRD models aren't any more 'built up' than the SR5 6-luggers.

 

same drivetrain. different shocks/struts.

 

If you plan on hardcore offroading, go with the SR5 and buy ARB lockers front and rear.

If not then buy the SR5 and leave it stock. I just prefer a simpler truck and all that electronic BS annoys me. Just my opinion.

 

Just bought a 2012 SR5 for roughly $4k to $5k less than the TRD. Not sure what the TRD has over the SR5 but I DO NOT have:

Upgraded wheels & tires
Navigation
Upgraded stereo

I DO have:

The same exact truck as far as I know without the features listed above
Backup camera
Color coded bumpers and fender trim
USB iPod/iPhone connection

I didn't really want the Nav system. I DID want the upgraded wheels, tires and stereo system but that would've pushed my payment out of range. The SR5 stereo sounds great but just doesn't have the full volume power that the upgrade does. I can deal with the wheels and tires for now. I'm going to upgrade those down the line anyway.

I also have built in bluetooth.

 

There are a few other items not mentioned besides the bilstein shocks and 17" alloys with 265/65 rubber, such as the upgraded upholstery, color keyed grill, door handles and outside mirrors, overhead console (maplights and sunglass storage), power converter and fake hood scoop. If those items arent of $1570 value to you (which is the retail price difference from the prerunner package) then dont waste your money on the sport package.

 

Also, TRD models have different seats, that was a major factor for me. I like comfy seats.
