Tacoma's come with conventional oil, which is wierd b/c FJ's have synthetic. Although FJ's have a diff V6. i'm curious how much they charge extra to do synthetic with our free oil changes. I go next month for my first one

No, your buddy is a crook.

Let me guess, if you were in his position you'd do it too? Because if someone is stupid enough to bring in their own oil and you're intelligent enough to steal it, that makes it OK, right? Grow up. Scumbags like you are why we have to watch our backs in situations like that.

My Dealer has offered to put in synthetic at the 1st oil change FOC, the service manager says they'll just change the intervals from 5 to 10K same as the FJ's.

Wow! This is OCD if I ever saw it, LOL. About your torque wrench......I am a ASE Master Heavy Duty Truck Tech, and have no problem dropping my new Tacoma off at the dealer and walk across the street for work, and at 5pm pick it up and go home. If there is any TSB's or recalls, they come up in the computer and are taken care of, and my truck is washed and happily waiting for me to take her home. OP, do you have special soap to wash your Tacoma too?? LOL

It's a simple piece of mind knowing I'm not gonna fuck up my truck like some of the tards at the dealership can. Even if my truck is under warranty I wouldn't trust them to change a damn light bulb. I enjoy working on my truck and enjoy knowing its done right. If you wanna get your "free" oil changes then good for you. I'll pay my $30 for synthetic and filter and be on my merry way.

And if you think the dealership has master mechanics changing oil then I feel sorry for you.

I do my own maintenance, even for my wife's new Sienna. Call me crazy, but I just like to. I'm a mechanic by trade, although not an auto mechanic, so I enjoy it. I don't care who else does what. It's a choice, just like any other choice. There is no right or wrong.

Do you torque the drain plug? "no" does it leak? "no" Is it over tightened? "I don't know" can you get if back off? "yes" case dismissed.

I will be using my own mobil 1 and oem filter...total $35. I bet toyota will charge that much for the synthetic "differential" over their free dino oil service.
I like doing my own work. I like the opportunity to carefully look around up top and underneath, and many times have found issues that needed attention, like loose connections, missing bolts, etc.
These trucks are about one of the easiest vehicles for the do it yourself oil changer. 20 minutes...tops. Easy as pie. I also do not have the time to drop off my truck and get a ride to work and drop off later. Nor do I even have time to wait an hour IF they can do it while I wait. In my case at least, doing it myself is CHEAPER for me than their free oil change.
    YMMV :)

i work for the body shop at the dealership i bought my truck. it is my first brand new vehicle with a warranty or any oil change deal. i will definately be taking advantage of the free oil change for one, i can drop it off at the mechanic side and walk to work 100 feet away. and second because of keeping the truck in the warranty. if something were to happen to it that was caused by improper methods during the service then it should be taken care of by either toyota or the dealership. it could be a pain in the ass to get done, but having records of the service would make it easier.

after all, we are human and anyone can make a mistake. i have done 100% of service on my vehicles prior to my tacoma and i may just take a peek after theyre done, but a free oil change is free and to save a few bucks to be able to put in the gas tank and drive my truck more is worth it to me.

My dealer said synthetic isn't put into new Tacomas, but recommended it after 25K.
