my wife has a camry, we both swear its the exact same steering wheel

also, nothin wrong with a salvage bag, don't let the frady cats here scare you off it

there are a few possibilities, but I'd contact the vendor and find out if the Camry and Taco bags are the same and see what they have to say

it could be they are the same and the dealership is just trying to force their hand and make you buy a brand new one from THEM.

    ....or, they could be right.

So where is the original air bag? Are people stealing air bags out of Toyota's now too, as well as Honda's?

What is a clock spring? How do ya know there is going to be a recall?
Best of luck with the airbag install.I don't see any reason the used one won't work. I am going through something similiar, need a drivers seatbelt for girlfriends Corolla, local used parts dealers won't sell me one, liability issues.

Is the airbag install that hard?

See this DIY instructional video of a Lexus IS steering wheel swap. Airbag replacement is just a small portion.

Remember Tacos are put together by UAW assembly line workers. Shouldn't require that much manual skill.

That's incorrect, seat belts are only under warranty for 5 years or 60k miles and only against defects. Accidents locking the pre-tensioners or your dog chewing are not manufacturer defects.

If they've got everything finished other than popping the airbag in then you're basically good to go. Your seat belt will function normally.

Take the bag you got, see if you can find the P/N and compare it to the one on your old bag. If the P/N is the same you should be all set. Also, if the size, mounting, and connector are all the same you should be set.

The only concern I would have is that (if it really is a Camry bag) the terminals are wired the same. You don't want the + and - swapped.

Call the place you bought it from and make damn sure it's the same. There might be some finer details between a Camry and Tacoma bag us non-engineers don't know about.

If you think everything matches disconnect both or your battery cables. Hold them lugs together for 30 seconds. The SDM holds power for a while after key off or battery disconnect. Holding the lugs together bleeds it down faster.

Plug in your bag, bolt it down and reconnect the battery. I usually sit way back in the seat when I hit the key for the 1st time. I've seen bags go off on guys. It's funny after the bleeding stops.

Air bags are a lot more rugged then one might think and it takes a good bit to light them off but a part that could save your life is not some thing worth taking chance on. A repair shop worth it's salt won't warranty any used part brought to them for good reason and if it's some thing that they can get hanged for they are not going to put it in no matter what. Signing off "no warranty applied" on a used part does not cut it in a court of law when it comes to safety related devices. Bolt it in your self and take your chances.

I would be interested in what would happen if he sells it, gets in an accident and the airbag doesn't go off. Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen for him, not the dealership.

So I screwed my ebay airbag in and its fits just fine. I stopped by toyota yesterday and asked them what exactly was the incompatability and they said it was the plugs behind the airbag. She said they dont fit. I am going to have a better look at this tonight after work. First glance, they look like they'd fit to me. I am also going to try a collision or body shop and get a second opinion. My seat belt is working fine now so I am not too worried.

My airbag went off in the desert

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clockspring

Toyota told me there would be a recall. There already is one but they are still manf the part and it should be within a month.

If it is, it wont be in my case

ok I firmly believe the dealership is just trying to make me buy their airbag. Their reason my bag would not work is the plugs wont fit. Lets examine these pictures.

    1. Left clip is from the clock spring they made me buy $220 down from $400. Right is the clock spring wire harness I bought for 9.99 that I would have had to solder to the existing clock spring.

    2. Another shot of the two clips, but top view

    3. What is this? My 9.99 plugs into the airbag I bought on ebay

So their excuse was the clips wont fit in because theyre the wrong size. While yes they were kind of hard to push in, they fit perfectly fine and comparing my clips to their clips, they are nearly identical. I am positive the plugs on their clock spring will go into the airbag I purchased

Everything should work fine...I sold an airbag with eBay clips and all and the guy had to cut them to add them to his truck...that was 3 months ago and he said everything was working fine...

The dealership must be messing with you...I've been told by a Toyota tech himself that alot of the Toyota vehicles run the same steering wheels, clock springs and controls with airbags...
    You live in Escondido?
