I got rid of my old car because it was an automatic. It was my first one ever, and I only got it because I'm partial to SAAB's and it was a barely used little old lady car. After driving it for a couple years, I just couldn't get over the auto. So here I am back with a manual transmission, even though I know that the auto in these trucks is a fine unit and has better fuel economy. I suppose I'll be driving manuals for as long as I can while the world moves on to automatics.

You automatic guys do realize that all an automatic is, is a series of clutches and bands right? While I agree the clutch is the sacrificial lamb in the manual trans, there is only one sacrificial lamb as opposed to many in an auto. Everytime you stop at a red light in an auto, you're slipping the clutches (unless you kick it in neutral every time).

Oh, btw, real men can drive a manual trans without synchros.lol

I remember one time back in high school I went to a high school baseball game in a 78 bronco 4x4. I was alone. There wasn't much parking and I was a stupid teenager so I decided to do what a few other people with 4x4s did and drive on top of this tall berm they had around the field to block the wind. As I crested the berm with my front tires the back tires lost traction and the truck started crabbing sideways and sliding back down the hill. I wasnt in four wheel drive and everything was manual locking hubs back then (which suck worse than a manual transmission). The backend slid so far sideways that I ended up just a few feet from coming down on top of a brand truck that was parallel parked on the street below the berm. The more gas I gave it the more it slid down toward the brand new shiny truck below. As long as I could give it a little gas it stayed put, but any throttle and I slid back down the hill.

What I did next is sort of unbelieveable but I swear on my Tacoma it is true.

I left the truck in drive, ran out of the truck, locked the hubs and jumped back in the truck.

With the hubs locked I just drove on up the hill.

Now I do know how to drive a manual transmission, in fact my first 2 vehicles, 56 jeep cj, and 69 jeep wagoneer were manual transmission and both 4x4 but had I been in a manual transmission I never would have gotten to the locking the hubs stage because of the clutch and inevitable rollback you get on a hill when you depress it. No matter how much you ride that clutch manual trannies tend to roll back on you and they suck on hills and that is why automatics are far superior for Offroad in my opinion.

It is also extremely hard to talk on the cell phone and eat a taco while driving a stick.

Why is this even a discussion? The auto in 2nd gens is better hands down. The only thing the manual has going for it is that some people like to drive them, that doesn't make it better.

    Oh and next time, search.

Stronger is probably auto but in a few months /years you'll be butthurt like half the people in this thread they didn't get a manual transmission (cept they won't admit it) :burnrubber:

LOL. I see you're 19. Been there done that. For over 20 years, all I drove were manuals. Never even considered an auto. Loved loved loved them. If I was 19, I'd go for the 6-speed. But I'm 41 now. After 20 years of shifting, I don't miss them at all.

But in the end, does it really matter? They're Toyotas. They're both strong as hell.

I have a standard now. Switching to auto hopefully soon. Enough said. I hate manuals in 2nd gen.

Haha, I bought my Tacoma around the time I was turning forty. I considered a manual transmission in a mid life crisis moment, like maybe it would take me back to the days of my youth, but then I remembered, youth sucked, driving a manual transmission sucked, and most of mine were 3 speeds, how bad must a six speed be? That is a lot of shifting! Still I am sure they are fun as heck for about a month, then every time you are in heavy stop and go traffic and your left leg starts shaking, you are beating your head against the steering wheel, saying why me?
Same with trying to multitask, like eating a taco and working your navigation system while tryingb to shift. Never again unless it is a weekend only vehicle and manuals stink for a 4x4. You want steady traction.
