brake pedal goes to the floor

    2006 double cab 4x4 brakes dont grip very well and pedal travels all the way to the floor. i have installed all new pads and shoes, bled all the lines and the master cylinder. pedal still goes all the way to the floor and truck wont stop. sometimes when you stomp on the pedal hard the brakes will grab hard and then the pedal moves under your foot and the breaks quit grabbing, but its not the abs doing it so i dont know what do do next.

    buy a master cylinder or a break booster?

    anyone had this problem before?

    Kinda sounds like the master cylinder is leaking internally back to the res., maybe a bad seal inside? A bad booster would make it harder to push the pedal if you got pressure, but it sounds like you are not making any pressure from the master. Good luck.

    If you adjusted the rear shoes properly, and bled the system correctly, most likely you need a M/C. Also check that the pedal and pushrod linkage return all the way. A failed vacuum booster will give a hard pedal with little braking power, not your symptoms.

    According to my Chiltons, if air gets into the master cylinder, it must've bled by the dealer using a special service tool.

    ABS master cylinder replacement not a DIY job according to them.

    Go to ncttora and look up the FSM for master cylinder brake bleeding.

    finally got the new master cylinder on and still have the problem. pedal goes all the way to the floor, but it does feel like the brakes are grabbing a little harder. i also noticed when bleading the right rear i got a lot of air. wonder if this could be a wheel cylinder problem?

    you still have air in the system.

    when you took out the old MC was there brake fluid anywhere it shouldnt be? like coming out of the pushrod seals?

    Definitely air in the lines.

    What is your procedure for bleeding the brakes? Best bet is to have a buddy work the pedal while you open/close the bleeder valves at each wheel, starting with the furthest from the master cylinder and working your way around to the closest.

    Make sure the fluid level never gets too low in the reservoir while you're doing this or you'll have to start all over at the rear passenger side.

    i started with the rr,lf,rf,lf. i first tried to pull o vacume on each but kept getting air so then go my wife to do the pump and hold method. i got a tone of air out of the rear brake lines more than i have ever seen and not 100% sure i got it all. where could i be getting all this air fom? is it possible i have a bad flexable line?

    Should be rear passenger, rear driver, front passenger, front driver. Don't move on until there is zero air coming out at the wheel you're working on, and always keep an eye on the reservoir to make sure it never drops below half full.

    Have your wife start pressing on the pedal and then open the valve. Close it before she gets the pedal to the floor and make sure she does not lift the pedal until the valve is closed or you'll suck more air into the system. It's a 5 minute conversation consisting of:

    You: "Down."
    Her: "Down."
    You: "Up."
    Her: "Up."

    Boring but effective.

    I've seen those advertised but have never seen how they work.

    So, how do they work? I imagine it's a snug fitting over the reservoir that pressurizes the system?

    Exactly how my husband and I do it.

    To the OP: Make sure your wife has constant pressure on that pedal while in the DOWN position. DO NOT open the bleeder until after she says DOWN. Then.....when you open the bleeder valve, that pedal will move down to the floor (make sure she understands to apply constant pressure to the pedal even after it 'stops' the first time. After you open the bleeder, the pedal will go down to the floor as it should). Then, when you're done...close the valve and tell her UP.

    Did you BENCH bleed the Master cylinder?

    When the truck is parked - put your foot on the brake as hard as you can for 10 seconds (or more). Does the pedal come to a stop? Or does it keep moving slightly towards the floor? If it's moving.....then you've got a leak somewhere.

    i did not bench bleed the master cylinder in a vise and tilt it back and forth as some instructions i have read. i just put it on the truck and followed the instructions from toyota that state to put your fingers over the ports and bleed.
    when truck is off if you press the pedal it will go all the way to the floor well before 10 seconds are up, but i cant find a leak anywhere...
