I'll get about 360 to the tank on a good day, however I could probably feather it for a bit more. I usually fill up tank not too long after the light turns on.

    All stock equipment.

When I was filling with premium, I noticed no gain in MPG, and sometimes thought I was getting worse. This was before I was using Fuelly or really calculating though.

I have a 2012 V6 Double (2 wheel drive) and when I am driving mostly highway I get 19-20 MPG... I am willing to bet I get slightly more than that if I actually drive to the gas light instead of filling up before hand (anyone else notice that they get more miles out of the first quarter and last quarter of their tank?!?).

It's about driving habits... The speed limit on my way to work is 65, I go 65. Do the math... going 70 would be a marginal (if even noticeable) time savings, but would have my truck going at a higher RPM for a longer period of time. Over the course of a week of driving to and from work, I might save a total of 10 minutes commuting if I go 70, but I am putting like 1.5 hours of a higher RPM on my engine, thus consuming more fuel for the same distance. Anyway, that's just my reasoning behind it, YMMV.

    Thats crazy.
I guess the 2.7L just has to work harder to move the truck?

The v6 can achieve this more efficently so if one is careful on the pedal you can achieve very close results (in terms of miles per fillup or range)

Moving from a 2007 v6 to this 2012 2.7L - I have to say I was expecting a more significant boost in range.

maybe I'll get a high miles 2nd gen and then send it off to dieseltoys for a Toyota OEM D4D conversion.
25+mpg & you can burn wvo(biodiesel) through it.
25mpg x 20gal=450 mi per fillup + your wvo tank would put it up near 600mi:D

    come on LOTTERY:rolleyes::D

Just the tire size alone has introduced a nearly 7% error.

When you think you've only gone 300 miles, you've actually gone around 320.
Also, when you think you're going 65, you're really going 70, and trucks, especially lifted trucks, are a brick in the wind. Our fuel economy can really take a shit above 65 mph.

I had been consistently getting 540km to a tank for quite awhile. I havn't had that good of a tank in months, 100km less on average. I fill up at the exact same Chevron and drive the same route pretty well every day. Im always light footed.

Bummer. Im debating getting rid of the Tacoma for a VW TDI, seeing as how I have access to a nice aluminum trailer and could get a low KM Golf TDI 5spd for the trade in value of my high KM truck.

I'll take the win on this one.

751 miles on 20.401 for 36.8 mpg. Just had to push it to break 750.

But most miles isn't the the best way to measure.

Best tanks was 681 miles on 18.080 for 37.7.

And that's with the secondary air filter still in.

I never let my tank get to the "Light On" phase.

My best tank ever was 19.54 MPG.

    215 Miles on 11 Gallons.

i am about 80-90 percent city and i get about 330 miles per tank. works out to be about 17-18 miles per gallon. I def do better then what the truck is rated at. I am happy with my milage so far. i havent had a chance to figure out a tank with mostly highway miles.

    My best was 10.63 l/100km = 22.1274302 miles per gallon. That was 451 km with 47.9 l.

hypothetically speaking, If one wanted to push ones limits...
would there be any harm in running the truck completely out of gas?

last time I did this I was in my first truck in high school.
A 1972 International Scout 2 4x4 with a broken gas gauge. (I carried a small 1gallon everywhere in that thing)

    Possibly.

There are a couple of issues. One is the fuel pump. The motor is cooled by the fuel running through it and the fuel in the tank.
Letting the tank get below 1/4 on a regular basis is not good for the pump.
Now, in over a million miles I haven't changed a fuel pump since the old mechanical engine-driven pumps in my 1960/1970 vintage cars, but it is a common enough claim that there is some truth to it.

The main issue is the engine and catalytic convertor.
When the EFI engine runs out of gas, it gets extremely lean on it's last seconds. When a carb'd engine went, the entire engine leaned out and sputtered at once... but all cylinder were fed from a common bowl.
With EFI, you may have one cylinder get a full shot of fuel, and the next gets nothing because of a bubble.
It can cause a CEL and set a code that will prevent passing a smog check if you need to do that within a week or so, but more important, the excessive heat from the lean cylinder can damage the valves and the catalytic convertor.

I ran mine down enough to get a light once:

    empty.jpg

Light on with 4 gallons remaining in the tank.
That's good enough for me to know that when the light comes on, I've got about 75 miles to find gas.

And I was worried that my RC-Base did not have a light. I had never run it that low before, and when it started getting close "E" and remembering that when my '94 was on E it was E, I almost aborted the test.

You'd have gotten even farther if you tire pressure wasn't low. :D
