Rear Window - DIY ideas?

Hello, hello!

During a massive paintball war, my back window in my 07 Tacoma had a fateful interaction with someone's head. The glass is broken. The dealership wants 800+ for the window; online I can find it for 300 shipped. My curiosity is, what DIY ideas are there for the rear window, excluding making it open automatically? Has anyone tackled the rear window in a project yet?

Like, just DIY installation of a factory window? It's installed with a rubber gasket (like windshields were in about '65) so the installation method is probably similar. Personally I'd look into having a glass repair shop do the work. And if they supply the part, it will probably be warrantied (along with the installation). Since glass work can leak, a warranty would be a nice thing to have...plus if they break the glass during installation, it's on them and not you.

Rear window install is easy peasy.

Install the gasket on the glass.
Place a thin rope (1/8" clothesline) in the bottom of the groove around the outside and the ends of the rope hanging out the top.
Lift the window into place, getting as much of the body into the gasket as possible.

While pressing the window against the body, a friend carefully pulls the rope, which "walks" the gasket onto the outside of the body the same way a tire machine works a tire onto a rim.

I too would look at havingit installed as said just for the warrenty. But in my case I would look into a solid window,I just don't use a sliding window.

The 2nd gen Tacoma back glass is bonded, not a gasket. It's not a DIY job, just take it to a glass shop.

I have done a few when i used to do auto glass lets just say take it to a glass shop its glued and bolted

 

which site did you find it for 300 shipped ?

 

if your experienced enough it doesn't look that bad; otherwise a shop will prob do it on the cheap...was less than $100 for me...super simple install the guy said.
