lately, you can't throw a rock without hitting a VW TDI around here. I got curious when i was looking for a new car for my lady and the wait was a month on a VW sportwagen TDI..the only VW you had to wait for.
BMW 3, X3, X5 diesels and A3, Q7 TDI audis, tons of mercedez bluetec diesel running around as well.

Id say Diesel has turned the corner big time in this country. Toyota would sell them like hotcakes...id be the first in line

... ^^^ ... I agree on the diesels, but Toyota is also experimenting with CNG vehicles in Texas. Honda, Ford & GM doing CNG experiments too.

FWIW ... I love diesels but would never buy another VW because of the way I was treated by them. Had bad luck with recent VWs (but love older VW Bugs).

The euro Hilux gets a 3 litre diesel with Turbo and they can have heated mirrors and leather or plastic seats. No V-6 for them. And they get the manual transfer case also. They get the old camary steering wheel also.

Since I bought my Taco, I have become aware of these Hilux when in the Caribbean. I see a lot of them.

 

VW is absolutely horrible IMO...will never own a vehicle they make.

I love small diesels, but there's too much misguided environmental lobby in the US for it to happen here any time soon.

RE: 2012 Hilux: Fewer passenger car type doodads that Americans love, more basic utility and smart design that the rest of the world loves. That's always been the appeal of the Hilux. I just wish it wasn't so goddam ugly.

 

It seems like VW starting going downhill in mid 1970s and especially after they started making the bug in Mexico.

As far as the Hilux being ugly ... I still like it being ugly and would buy it in a heartbeat. ...

I would be interested in a Hilux diesel, but I still think the V6 gasser we have is a fine motor and I'm happy with it.

Leather? I bought my '07 and '12 w/ Katzkin leather installed by the dealer, is my local dealer the only dealer that can do that?

If only it looked like the Tacoma, it would be the total package. Well, make it a 4L 260HP diesel and then it would be the total package. Diesels are awesome but this thing would wheeze a bit on the highway with my 4500lb trailer and another few hundred in the bed.

I'd buy one with a diesel. And, as a bonus, it looks much better than any 2nd gen.

 

I think it is more that the manufacturers in America are hooked on gas burners.... There are a few reasons.

1- Americans tend to drive cars about 100,000 miles max and then get a new one. Gas engines tend to go about 100,000 miles before issues creep up.
2- Americans tend to buy or lease a new car about every 3 years. No need to put a diesel motor in if you're going to replace your car in 3 years.
3- Overseas drivers will drive a vehicle literally until the thing falls apart and they like them to be easy to work on. Which lasts longer and is easier to work on? A diesel motor by far. So they are big sellers overseas.
4- Americans love horsepower.... but they also love torque. Nobody has educated a lot of the public on the massive amounts of torque that a diesel engine generates and how they are actually not the stinky, noisy, polluters that everybody thinks they are. They last forever, get good mileage, and require little maintenance. This makes them very unpopular with the American auto manufacturers because they want lots of turnover, dealerships want lots of repair work, factories and dealers want people buying new cars every 36 months, and nobody in the industry (except for independent mechanics) wants you driving a car or truck for 20+ years (except for "that guy" who services Porsches, VW's, Mercedes, etc.... many of which have been on the road for 40+ years).

I wonder if the heated mirrors are interchangeable with the Tacoma.

 

FWIW it's not environmentalists keeping diesels out of the US. Environmentalists LOVE clean diesels. But the oil companies don't want them .. too much invested in gasoline refining in this country. That won't be changing anytime soon.

leather is part of a package that includes a range of things not unlike our TRD packages, they essentially throw in leather. the ones that give an option between cloth and leather usually charge around $1000, for a full size truck at that.

$2k was just obscene after i had already shelled out $5600 extra for TRD OR package, specially when you get leather on a Tundra after upgrading to Platinum package for $4600

 

I wonder what they're experimenting with? The agency I work for still has a bunch of early 2000 Chevy Cavaliers that are CNG/Gasoline hybrids. The CNG tanks take up a portion of the trunks.

Also agree with your statement about VW.

 

I just pulled the stickers out of the glove box for my trucks - the '07 was a $1050 upgrade option for the double cab. The '12 sticker doesn't have the dealer add-on attached, but from what I remember it was $1200 for the '12 double cab.

Everything you buy on a new vehicle is negotiable, main point is you can drive it off the lot with leather if you want to.
