I just bought my first Tacoma, it's a '08 Double Cab SR5 TRD 4x4, so I don't know about the intricacies with them yet.

Is it normal to have that steady beep sound when the key is out of the ignition and the driver's side door is open?

    It's driving me nuts.

I would also appreciate anything else you guys think I should be aware of.

I hope it turns out to be a good truck.

    Thanks

Should be no beep if the key isn't in the ignition

Hmmm...never paid enough attention to recall.

    Lights on maybe?

The only solid beep I hear is when you try to use the key fob to lock the truck when a door is open. If you do that the truck sounds a solid beep until you close the door.
