My Tacoma has high mileage (200,000km) which isn't too bad and plan on driving it for a while before I do anything drastic. I would eventually like to put a new engine into it once the current one is miled out. Can you buy a new 4.0L engine thats never been used? Or can you only get a rebuilt one? I have tried searching the forum and google but haven't found much on it.

Not to state the obvious... but have you checked with a Toyota dealer?

See if they can get the FJ 4.0 as it has a few more horsepower than the Tacoma. 236hp 266ftlb for the 2012 Tacoma. 260hp 271ftlbs for the 2012 FJ.

Took mine to 256,000 miles then traded on a new truck. Engine was still going strong...only work I ever did to it was change the starter motor (once) and spark plugs/wires three times.

What do you have to change to bolt that in? Is there any conversion kit needed?

I couldn't tell you honestly. It could go check my wife's 07 FJ transmission versus my 11 Tacoma transmission if it wasn't dark. There is a lot more that would have to be checked as well. Maybe a Tacoma mechanic or tech can tell us more.

For the money you may be better off rebuilding your motor and doing some performance upgrades.

Someone with a blown radiator had their engine replaced for 14k at the dealership. His insurance paid for it.
