That sucks. Looks like a cheap ass china pot metal key. The gorilla ones are much more stout. Good Luck.

I broke another key finishing the job. I still have three left.

Now that it's done, though, the difference is fantastic. I won't go as far as "smooth as glass" like some have said, but it's like driving a different truck. I wish I'd known about this before.

I was skeptical when I got the rings out of the box. I didn't expect them to be such light, flimsy plastic. They did the job, though.

    Thanks again, OP!

Great! Might want to order a gorilla key if it will fit from Wheelers. I think it is better quality than what you have been working with.

I was researching this issue and the consensus was that our trucks need 106 inner bore. So just the other day I ordered some hub centric rings that are 106 inner bore. I see some here are using 106.1, so I wonder if the ones I ordered are going to fit now.

I'm using the 106.1 and there's still the SLIGHTEST HINT of vibration. Maybe your 106's will be smooth as glass. Let us know.

One thing I wanted to add to this. I have the wheelers offroad steel wheels in 16". I know alot of people on here run them without the center caps, but I noticed something this weekend when taking my wheels off to wax them. the center cap fits exactly over the hub, no wobble or movement whatsoever. Now I know that the wheels themselves are lugcentric, but I would think that having that center cap on helps. Cause when the center cap is on, it fits on the hub perfect, and the wheel fits perfect over the center cap.
    just an observation I made.

how tight are your lugs that you are breaking keys? they are only supposed to be torqued to 85ft/lbs arent they?

Sub'd.. good Info Sandjunkie! I've had this exact issue for a year now. Thought it might be due to UCA's, balance/rotation, etc.. I'm doin this asap. Maybe after I install my UCA's and get the balance, etc.. just to rule that out.

Now i need to figure out my brake shutter.. warped discs?

I don't know... The place that I have my wheels balanced/rotated has received a phone call from this aggravated customer.

The only way I can picture the key breaking is either it's a bad batch from Gorilla, which can happen, or it was over torque with a impact gun.

The Tacoma hub is 106mm so you'll need a ring with an 106.1 inner bore. Even though it might be listed as 106mm, in actuality it's going to be 106.1mm. If the hub's outer measurement is the same size as the ring's inner measurement, it will not slip over.

Great observation. Whenever you see wheels with a slip-through cap, they are designed to be used with it. The cap's thickness takes up the gap between the wheel's hub opening and the hub itself in the case of the steel wheels from Wheelers. However, with most manufactures, even with the slip-through cap in use it still won't be hub-centric and hub rings will be necessary(hassle) to minimize vibrations.

Toyota recommends 85ft/lbs. I tend to go between 85-90ft/lbs.

Even brand new tires can bad from the factory. Try to see if you can slap on a different set of wheels/tires to rule out the control arm. Warped disc will cause your steering wheel to vibrate as you're braking.

Put these on today, and also rotated the tires, which would have caused bad vibrations before, but it was smooth as can be. I highly recommend getting these if you have vibes with after market wheels.

I just got mine in on Saturday. The hub is 108mm on my method wheels and I got the 108 to 106mm rings. I will get them installed hopefully next week when the lift goes on.

I just purchased new wheels/tires from Tire Rack (received them 5/30/12). Hub bore is 108mm. When I called them the next day and asked where my hub rings were at, they told me they were lugcentric wheels and that I didn't need them. They even told me that 108mm o.d. to 106mm i.d. hub rings do not exist since they are so close in size. I told them that was total b.s. and that I wasn't going to mount 108mm wheels on a 106mm hub. Been there done that trying to figure out the shaking issue with lugcentric wheels. After 15 minutes of arguing with one of their "techs", I finally told them they had lost a customer and that I was going back to Discounttiredirect. At that point, they actually hung up on me. Not very good customer service if you ask me. When I bought wheels for my GTO from DTD, they sent me plastic hub rings with the wheels. When I called back and asked them if they had aluminum ones, they sent me a set for free (with next day shipping for free as well). Now that's customer service. This was my first (and last) experience with Tire Rack. I will never spend another dime with them. DTD will get all of my online wheel/tire purchases in the future.

The ones linked in the OP's first post are plastic. They're on the truck now and working fine, but I'm worried they'll break when I have the tires rotated/balanced next. I'm going to see if I can't find some aluminum ones.

yup, the new wheels i got are 108mm...i bought some plastic hub rings (108 to 106) and they cured the vibrations...i already had the lugs you linked...

    edit:

aluminum - easily corroded, sticks to wheel, expensive but more durable
polycarbonate plastic - can melt/crack from high speed braking but is cheap

I just bought these wheels used for my '99. Got them mounted and balanced that same day. The next day, first drive at 60-75mph there was a crazy violent shaking/vibe. I'm not sure if the wheels are lug/hub centric. Bought them off a guy that had em on a T100. Took them back to the tire shop to see if the balancing was wrong. The guy added a bunch of weight. When I took it back on the freeway the shaking settled down but there is still a noticeable vibe.

    http://www.devino-wheels.com/Devino-DV-349-16-X-8-inch:devino-dv349-16x8

Does anyone think the lugs/rings will solve this issue on my 1st gen? Or is it even the same problem everyone else is having? :notsure:
