Honestly I started eye balling the tacoma about a year ago and ever since I feel like every 20th car I see is a tacoma.

They seem to have become very popular during this body style

Zombie thread but a good one. Yes, they are everywhere in Southern California, but damn, it's like the state-issued truck in Hawaii. Yet another reason I love going to that very, very weird yet awesome archipelago.

Speaking for the South, I think there is a lot more of the "American truck" brand loyalty, and a lot more hostility towards a foreign brands in general, especially among the majority of truck owners, and especially in the more rural areas. I have spent a decent amount of time on the West Coast (Cali, not Oregon/Washington), and noticed that mentality was much less prevalent there.

I think the post about the "born in a tacoma, so why wouldn't I drive one" mentality applies a lot the other way around. A lot of people I know grew up going hunting, fishing, and working in a ford/dodge/GMC. If it was good enough for their parents, and they have lots of positive experience with a brand while growing up, why shop elsewhere?

It's a shame that a lot of people don't consider Toyota trucks for these reasons, they miss out on some great vehicles.

Trails in the PNW are narrow so you need a mid size. That's my excuse.

Not sure if you consider Kentucky south or not. Tacomas are popular here. Could be that there is a Toyota plant in Frankfort.

Absolutely! Tacomas are actually fairly popular here too, I see a lot in general, but I cannot tell you how many people I have met across NC, SC, and VA that have said they would never even consider looking at a foreign truck, regardless of size. Those comments were just based off of my personal observations, but I have seen a lot less of that in other parts of the country, and a lot less of that from people I have worked with outside of the SE and MW.

The trails comment is probably pretty accurate too. I know in W NC and VA, a lot of the trails and old logging roads are too tight in a lot of places for many full size trucks.

It's funny, the company I work for is based in Des Moines IA, and every time I go there for work all I see are Fords and Chevy's driving around. You rarely see a Tacoma. They are simple people...
