Short throw shifter worth it?

I have a 09 2.7 access cab, and I plan on making this a trail vehicle. Is a short throw shifter worth installing?

That being said, all it is going to do is lower your shift time. Other than racing (in a legally sanctioned race on a track with proper safety equipment, of course), there is no real advantage to it. If you like the feel of the way it'll shift, go ahead. But I don't think there's any advantage in an off-road situation.

 

I will tell you in a 4.0 6 speed the answer is YES a hundred times over. If your throws are as sloppy as the 6 speed then get it. It wasn't the improvment in the distance of the throw for me as much as how much more crisp and mechanical it feels. Plus, if you think you may want it, it's not like there are any downsides.

 

I like mine..would i buy it again?..not sure..stock throw wasnt all that bad, but you will notice a difference.

 

I have an LC Engineering short-throw shifter in my '01, and I don't think I'd do it again. As their web site states:

I did notice instantly that my shifter was much louder than the stock one (and at the time, LC Engineering didn't mention that on their web site.) Are all short-shifters loud? I don't know, but I'd guess they are since they all appear to be machined out of similar metal.

The other issue I have is that when it's cold, it's hard to get into 1st and 2nd gear. I don't know why, but it's really annoying.

I personally like the idea of a short throw shifter, but I'm afraid I won't be spending ~$200 again if the shifter doesn't resolve the noise issue.

Looking at the URD web site, some of their products look like they've addressed the noise issue by not replacing the stock shifter:

Not only does it sound like they've addressed the noise issue, the cost of their kit is considerably lower. It also looks like they have a kit for use poor base model 5-speed owners(?) If that's true, then that's the route I'm going!

 

The 6spd short throw is amazing

 

The first mod I made to my Taco was to get the URD short shifter for the 6-speed. I am very happy with my decision and I have no regrets. This is the way it should cone from the factory.

 

I installed my URD short throw shifter today.

The installation instructions are spot on and make the whole process very straight forward. The hardest part of the process was getting that plastic cup on the shifter ball off. Also, all the parts and hardware provided are top notch.

So far I'm really digging the shorter throw it provides. The one thing I'm not thrilled with is that reverse is now much harder to engage. It concerned me a bit at first while I was testing the shifting during the installation. However, I've figured that the best way to engage it is by slapping the shifter left to get it past the reverse gate. I also have the TRD shifter ball which I would imagine makes this easier than it would be with the smaller "sport car" type stock shifter.

As for the rest of the gears everything is spot on and very crisp so no concerns there. Overall I'm really liking the much shorter throw and the added hight on the shifter (about an inch) is a nice bonus.

Had short throws on other vehs. I have always liked them.

 

I've had a short shifter on every manual car that I've owned and I have always liked them. Typically, the shifting will feel notchy, as someone mentioned you'll get a little more noise/vibration from the shifter area, but overall it makes for a better driving experience imo.

 

I've had mine for a while now, after a while it just feels normAl, and you forget that its in there.
