Will my gas mileage get better?

I have a 2012 double cab Trd sport prerunner that has about 1,000 miles on it. I am driving almost all city and I am only getting about 14mpg when I try to drive easy. Is this because it just isn't broken in yet? I am just kind of frustrated because most people are saying they get between 16-20

 

that's why im so amazed im all stock.

 

Driving all city can be the problem if traffic is rough with lots of lights. Could be what you can expect. Can you describe you daily commute?

How are you calculating mpg, more than a few times we've seen people assume that when the light comes on they used 21 gallons and take their miles divided by 21 instead of the actual gallons pumped!!!!!

 

My truck has 1,500 miles on it and I'm getting 13 MPG. 95% of my driving is city, on 4 miles to work and I drive home through the country with minimal starts/stops. I calculated it by dividing how many miles I had driven on that tank by how many gallons I put in to fill it back up. Terrible!

2012 V6 double cab 4x4 by the way and it's only been in 4x4 once the day after I bought it.

yes that's how to figure your mileage per tank.
I got 13ish for the first 2k or so. 6 spd. manual. Then in got better.
Depends on a lot of factors, Temp, Driving habits, type of commute, some think gas grade? and of course mods, mods, mods.
Best i ever got stock 19.3 doing 65 mph on the interstate. averaged 17 and change stock.
Now I'm lucky if I get 16 mpg.

Do you have an auto? I hear they get better mpg. Stop and go city would be 14 for me if I were stock. Who knows now I'm not stock and live in VT.
Hang in there it may get better.

 

This is almost the exact same as me. I drive to work only about 4 miles also, I also divide by how many miles I have driven. The traffic is pretty bad so I guess that is why it is so bad. How much better can I expect it to get with more miles.

 

Auto trans, no mods.

 

Driving less than 10 miles all the time is not very good either, the vehicles internal fluids and parts never get fulled warm and that could be a major factor.

Bought my 2012 TRD DC Sport in March, just over 8000kms on it so far and i have been keeping track of my mileage since day one. I was averagiing about 19.5MPG/US then read the thread on here about 0% ethanol gas and decided to give it a try. Boosted my mileage up to almost 22.5 MPG/US with 91 Octane / 0% ethanol...should note that 80% of my driving is HWY @ 90km/hr average ( mph????? )

 

shit man i bought mine back in 07 with 6000 on it & been avg.13 till about 3 months ago & im avg. cant seem to get a full wk out of it w/putting in shop for a upgrade or warr. work .

 

Don't get high expectations, even with my 4 banger it isn't great by today's standards, if a vehicle doesn't get over 30mpg, its a gas hog basically.

 

My 2012 4.0 4x4 DCLB gets about 16-18 with less that 1000.... Either your foot is heavier than you think or you forgot to carry the 1...

Remember what MPGs really are:

Gallons per hour of fuel burned/per mile traveled....

For a given RPM (horsepower) you'll be burning X number of gallons of fuel per hour....
(1/2 LB of fuel per HP per Hour is a good rule of thumb) Autogas weighs about 6.1 lbs/gal at 15C

To get optimal MPGs you need to be turning the lowest RPM for your MPH....

2000 RPM at 45MPH yields a lot worse MPGs than 2000 RPM at 70MPH even though power output is the same.

 

And I thought I was getting bad MPG! 13 really!? I bought mine new 2009 DCSB Auto 2wd TRD Sport. I got about 22-25 for the first 5-7k miles... then I noticed a massive drop after my magnaflow exhaust to average 16mpg. Then added k&n drop in air filter 10k miles later, and it came back up to about 18. Last month at 38k on it I added 5100's and leveled the front, and also but 265's AT tires and in still seeing about 17. For the past several months I do mostly street because I'm not working (on disability from surgery and a second pending surgery from my motorcycle accident) but before that I was about 80% highway with little traffic. Regular route to work was between 20-50 miles one way all highway depending on which location I was scheduled at. So long story short, I have lots of mods, travel mostly street now, bigger tires and a lift, run 87 octane (chevron) and don't try to baby it and I still get at least 16.

I just find it weird that everyone is saying it usually increases after break in, but mine decreased after break in, and then mods just made it worse. I'd get that checked though! Have them check A/F mixture, compression, spark, and all that stuff. I took mine in at least 3 times while under warranty and complained of bad mpgs, they have simple ways of testing. Although I doubt and of their easy "computer" tests are very reliable, its still some reasurrance for you. I made them take my spark plugs out and check for premature wear, but all looked good. But now after reading this I'm grateful to get 16-17. I would sell it if I got 13

I've got a lift and level kit and I'm running LT285/75/16 ATs. I get average 17MPG. Freeway diving I rock the slow lane with my cruise control set at about 60 on my speedometer. It equates to about 65mph. I do drive about 70% highway. Your milage seems really low to me. I do remember that when my foot was in it I got around 13MPG. If you can make it through an entire tank without punching it for any reason, I think you might get better milage.

I am on my 4th tank of gas. My 2nd and 3rd tanks were 16.87 and 16.77 in town driving. That may not seem that good to some people, but I think it is pretty decent.

If you get in the habit of keeping your RPMs under 2000, your gas mileage will be decent. If you keep them 1500 or lower, you will see significant changes, but will probably piss off the people behind you. Gentle acceleration is the key.

My previous vehicle was a Ford Escape, and I averaged 14.5 to 15 in town. I went real easy on the gas pedal for one tank and averaged 18.
