Play in the rear end

How much play in the rear end is normal? I have the rear locker engaged and the other wheel is on the ground in this video. With both wheels on the ground (locked or open) the driveshaft has about this same amount of play as well.

I'm not too familiar with how much play is normal on the Taco, but I've seen plenty of other cars with that much play and it's normal.

The problem with play in the driveline is that it's very difficult to pin point exactly what's loose, and if it's only one thing. Could be many things worn down after a while.

Yeah the noise started when it had less than 15000 miles on it and that ring gear and pinion had less than 1000 on it. I'm not so concerned with the play as I am with this noise. Turn your volume up and listen. This noise is coming through my rear sliding window while driving.

Wow that almost sounds like bearings?

 

I know... but what bearings? The noise is gone with the rear drive line removed and driving in front wheel drive, which could mean carrier bearing I guess.

 

Still under warranty??

 

The factory warranty is up but I do have a warranty on it. They covered the ring gear and pinion the first time, but I have no proof that the noise was there prior to the 33's and they will likely just blame it on the oversize tires this time, plus they only cover stock parts and if the ring gear and pinion need to be replaced I will just pay to go to 4.88's this time. I'm not sure if they cover bearings. Whatever bearing is may be if it is one.

I believe the u-joints are fine. I greased them up and played with them when I had the driveshaft off and there is 0 play in them and they all move as they should. As for the carrier bearing, I believe it moves as it should. Not sure how else to diagnose it. Did a make shift drop on it but that did nothing for the noise.

 

Sorry.... but yes you're right the dealer will most likely not work on it because they'll say the oversized tires caused extra strain on the drivetrain components. I'd go with the 4.88's too...good choice since you'll have to re-do the gears anyway.

 

If your gonna stay at 33's i'd go 4.56's at 4.88 you'll be hella over geared

Although I do have a connection at the dealership here, maybe if I just borrow somebody's stock wheels, they can just tell the warranty company that I have stock tires, although that would mean I would have to stick with 3.73's.

 

So if anybody is still lurking, want to help me run down the options?

So lets say the noise is somewhere in the axle housing/differential or whatever it goes by, what all could it be? I can think of 2 obvious choices:

1. Ring gear and pinion
--bad angle: I find this unlikely unless something could come loose, I am pretty sure that there was 0 noise from it for aleast the first 1000 miles
--damaged: maybe a metal shaving from the initial break in period somehow got into it and damaged it

2. Bearings, I don't know how many there are though
I know there are the wheel bearings out near the tires. I have grabbed both wheels and jerked them around from all angles and there is no play there, but does that mean they are fine or could they still be making the noise? Also would the noise be strain dependent like it is? when I shift into neutral the noise pretty much goes away, it was also gone when I was driving around without a rear driveline. I thinnk there is also a bearing on the pinion, could be that.

After those 2 I don't really know... What do you guys think? Any help is very appreciated

 

How many miles are on your truck?

 

About 17,000. Somewhere just shy of 15,000 when I believe the noise started.

 

Wait you have an 05 with 17,000 miles on it????

 

Had 11,800 on it when I bought it back in Oct. haha. and it has had something like 20 oil changes all done at the dealership, plus a shit ton of mods and such. Yay for old guys with no where to go!! haha
