Have a set of black Westin Platinums on the way and before i install them on the truck i wanted to have them coated with bedliner. Anyone ever have to remove the rubber step pads from a set of Westins ? From what i can tell online each pad is held on by 4 " barrel clips" ???? not too sure what that is. Just afraid to break them before i even install them !

Yank 'em. Clips are generally one-time use. Biggest worry will be damaging the "peg" on the underside of the pad. I can get you new clips for $.85/ea. New pads are about $25/ea.

All I can say is that its a gamble ... as long as the clip comes out still attached to the peg, you should be okay. If the clip stays in the bar, odds are the clip will not "regrab" the peg, possibly needing a new pad.

I tried taking the pads off my raptor nerf bars & broke a clip.
I ended up sanding everything, using silicone around & under the pad for the biggest rust came from the rubbing of the pad on the bar (only one winter).
My bars were not westin but black powder coated with a 10 yr warranty but shipping them to mfg was a pita so that is why I used bed coating.
I went right over the pads.
    It turned out great.
NO chipping in over a month using them everyday the silicone really worked well the pad is on their now with no flex.......
    This is my experience

Thanks for the response " Simons Mom " i was just looking at your thread a couple of days ago and saw your pics, i was actually going to send you a message. I thought it looked like you sprayed over the pads but couldn't be sure...

I bought the Rustoleum Spray on bedliner ( rattle can ), is that the same thing you used on yours ?

Yes that is the stuff I used. Rustoleum Bed Coating spray can
Mine were a year old & already rusty from one mild winter.
The pads like in the picture had rubbed along the metal leaving rust.
Imagine from dirt/salt etc getting up there?
I tried pulling one of the pads off carefully & one of the pad darts snapped.
Ended up using silicone to reattach the pad, clamped til dry,
Then put a small bead along the pad wiped down edges.
Sanded & scuffed everything including the plastic.
I had to use a rust inhibitor primer on metal for mine were already rusty.
Then two light coats of spray it would be easier if you could hang them but I use the saw horses, it dries pretty fast, flipped them.
The bottoms you do not see anyway and as long as you do not spray huge gops on there it will not run.
I also did the hangers & pushed painters tape into the screw holes to prevent the coating for going in there.
Shake can really well & periodically to keep grit in the mix.
The lighter coats keep the texture & grippyness.
A thick coat does not feel grippy.
They have held up great no issues even in a power car wash not that I used full power inches from them.
But no chips & the pads have stayed exactly like the pictures.
The dirt will cling due to the texture more just so you know.
Good luck I am glad I did the mod especiallly due to salt.
and am happy with it on the plastic
Maybe your westins the pads come off easier though.
    post up pics!
