    Drive a manual......

Engine breaking is not a bad deal......If you could turn it off. If it had a switch like I have seen on some trucks, I would love to have it. Otherwise, I would hate it as much as I do ABS on a truck, esp a 4x4.

Understood, so were just talking about the transmission dropping gears at unwanted times.

Never noticed that in my '05, which was an auto transmission -- it would downshift but certainly never "launched me forward". As someone who has owned most manual transmission vehicles, I was actually impressed at how well the 5speed auto did engage engine breaking. The newer models may be different though.

Yep. I like to be the one making the decisions on how I drive. Not the truck. ABS has just about gotten me killed a time or two so far. Engine braking aint on the same level, but I just dont like a stupid truck making the decisions. I want it to do what I tell it to do and I'll be happy.

Make a decision and do the ABS bypass mod , or gank the fuse if it bugs you that much

I'm going to. I'm waiting on a write up from a guy about how to do it without the light coming on and staying on. He said he had done it as a trial, but didnt have it done quite permanent. Once he did that, he was going to do a write up on it. I may have to look up who it was and send him a message.

I have a neighbor with a 1st gen who has over 180,000 miles on it. Never once changed the rear brakes. He says if the proportioning valve were a little more offset, the rear brakes would actually be used.

I don't like drums because I've never had a car with them and I've never learned to change the shoes. The stopping distance may be good, but they just feel squishy to me.

All the threads I have seen, the light comes on and stays on until you restart the engine, or are not for my truck. I have a base with no atrac or locker or any of that stuff. This guy had it so that it kicked back in immediately and the light would go off instead of having to restart the truck. I havent checked back in the thread again, but I dont think he has posted it up.

If they made drum brakes on the front, I would never have to replace my brakes for the first 180,000 miles.

i like the engine braking but sometimes i would like to turn it off in certain situations. it wish there is a button to turn it on/off it like in other trucks that have tow/haul mode

Is there a way to make it kick in? I was trying tonight on my way to my sisters and heading down a steep hill. it seems like when I am lightly on the brakes it does it more often...? I dunno

Rear drums have better stopping power then discs. Way better. The reason they switched to discs in he first place was thanks to brake fade in drums when they get hot.

Brake pads are cheap to replace vs a transmission. At least that's what we'd say at the racetrack. ;)

And how exactly do you figure the engine braking is harming the transmission ?

So... I have about had it with this mother trucking downshift BS.
Can someone who knows more than me please figure out what wire I can ground or put a switch on to bypass this?!?!!? Every weekend when I go camping, I travel over some light, rolling hills and this BS downshift kicks in, killing my coasting speed. I do whatever I can to squeeze a little more MPG outta this truck and I consider myself fully capable of determining when is appropriate to downshift.

PLEASE HELP!!! I will cut, solder, reroute, add a switch... whatever to kill this feature!!!

My 6 spd only shifts when I want it to doesn't use any gas going down hill. How come really big trucks have drum brakes. Wonder why real race cars that turn more then one direction have paddle shifters?
