I just took off of my right front mud flap so it would match the left side. The left front flap snapped off while I was backing over some rocky terrain in little river canyon. As of now, I do not plan on putting them back on. Always thought they were way too long anyway.

Many of us trim them! take off 2-3" off the bottom. You still get some protection and the look is better balanced.

I took mine off and had the lower part of the doors and behind the rear wheels wrapped in clear vinyl.

you guys that take them off are not chipping your own paint, your chipping the paint and cracking the windshields of the cars behind you.. i'm sure they think you look cool though.

I had considered removing the mud flaps on my truck, up until yesterday when I drove over a long gravel driveway. For several miles afterwards, I was spraying rocks seemingly everywhere (under my truck, on the roadway behind, etc). Would have been far worse without the mud flaps, so the mud flaps stay on.

This may not help the OP, who is possibly in need to remove the flaps for tire clearance, but regarding the crappy front flaps, check out this thread:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/224260-what-type-trim-do-i-have.html

I lost both my front mud flaps on my '05, and was a bit surprised to see the design hadn't been improved when I bought my 2012. I ordered a set of these Husky mudflaps for the front, and so far they're doing great. They're a bit shorter than the stock flaps, so there's less risk of scraping and breaking them, but they look very "natural" on the truck, are relatively affordable and installed pretty easily.

Actually, Husky has a discount deal on the mud flaps available right on this website.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/group-buys/188426-husky-liner-mud-guards-29-95-shipped.html

I purchased a set of four (front & rear) for my 2012 TRD Off-Road roughly two or three months ago and they work & look great. The discounted price and free shipping are a pretty good deal. As the instructions in that thread say, call the 800 number, ask for Melissa, and mention "Tacoma World Group Buy."
