Yea that's the right term. Back in the day. With up to 35 computers in some vehicles dam well sure something is going to fry. I had a caprice also. Used 2quarts of oil a week. Motor mount was broke and would lock the throttle wide open if it pulled off it's mount. AHHHHHHHHH the good ol teenager days hehehehehe.

Great story and glad its working again. I would get a decal that says 1.21 gigawatts ran through this truck because other than Marty McFly i dont think anyone can say there car was struck by lightning and was fixed!

D: Poor taco! I don't know if I could trust the truck again after that, though. You could have some crazy problems come up with it down the road. Be careful!

Near field strike, does not have to actually hit the truck to do damage rare but possable. A car/truck is probably the safest place to be in a thunderstorm it forms what is know as a Fariday cage the lightning flows over it not through it.

The Warden of the prison I work at went out and bought himself a brand new F-150 4x4 crew cab that was fully loaded. It got struck by lightning while at work less than a month after he bought it. All of the electronics had to be replaced and even then, the truck still wasn't right so he traded it in on another new truck. I felt bad for the guy too because this was his first new vehicle in a long time and then it gets struck by lightning. I know he lost quite a bit of money trading it in but he got something else that didn't have lightning damage.

LOL at the comments about grounding the truck to protect it.

That bolt traveled a couple of thousand feet to get yo your truck.
3" of rubber tires is not going to protect it, and grounding the truck would have drawn MORE of a charge.

    Would likely be burned.

Being inside the vehicle, you would not be shocked, but the metal will still be heated as the current passes through it and that would certainly cause some serious burns.

Beside the fact that people that are simply NEAR a strike, without being directly hit, are hospitalized all the time because of heart and muscular problems.

The faraday cage is not a fully protective thing.
You PROBABLY won't die, but you are not going to have a good weekend.

While tires are rubber, they also include carbon (it's what makes them black), which makes them somewhat conductive.

And after the lightning passes through 10,000 feet of air, do you think 4" of tire is going to stop it?

Aircraft are insulated and they get hit all the time.
    They are often damaged too.
