Billies 5100's front set to 1.75 plus 1/4 taco lean spacer. Rears Billies plus AAL for a 2" leaf. 265/75/16 BGF's. Double din Kenwood stereo w/bluetooth and steering wheel controls and JBL speakers front & rear. Heavy duty battery. Billet grill blacked out. K&N air filter and MBRP cat-back. Just tuned it up new plugs and new front brake pads. Steel powered coated tailgate cap. Billet Grill painted black & factory roof racks. Oh new head lights thanks to toyota.
its not the oil that will break down at 10,000 miles its the oil filter you have to worry about. So for $35. worth of oil & new filter that's pretty cheap insurance. I chg my syn oil every 5000 mile w/ Mobile 1 & M1 filter.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm gonna mark my filter and everything and talk to them about doing it every 5k instead of 10k they will prolly refuse the free oil changes be my luck though

    There won't be.

Toyota's old service interval before they stuck the idiot light on the dash was 7500 for normal service and 5000 for severe service.

    That was assuming non-synthetic.

They phased out the 7500 around 2003-2005 depending on the model as cluster facelifts added the maint light, since Toyota didn't put any intelligence behind that light other than "5000 miles"

The Camry V6 engines that were sludging and subject to recall were not properly maintained. I talked to more than one tech who had sludged engines come in at 30k that had NEVER been serviced.

My '94 pickup? I didn't take care of it worth a crap.
Iffy Lube every 10-12k if it was lucky. Non synthetic Castrol GTX 10w40 until it had 100k on it, then I went to 20w50. I traded it in on an '03 Tundra... it had 230k on it.

Show them the Owners Manual Service interval. It is in writing from Toyota. They are required to follow the service interval outlined in the book for your truck. If they argue I would go to another dealer.

Hmm that's interesting. I wonder why it's not the same as Corolla. Course i know it's a 2.7 vs a 1.8 in Corolla

I change my own oil and I use Amsoil full synthetic and filters. I change my oil every 15k and change the oil filter every 7.5k. My family has been using Amsoil for many many years at this interval and have never had any engine trouble. My parents use it in their 1997 Ford Explorer and 1994 Cadillac Seville, both which have over 200,000 miles and run great. I used it in my 1997 Tacoma which had 230,000 miles on it when I got my 2009 and My wife and I use it in our 2009 DC Tacoma SR5 and our 2009 Toyota Venza. Any how I just thought I would throw this tidbit out there. Its amazing how clean this oil looks when changed at 15,000 miles. I am sure the dealership is putting in a sub par synthetic anyway but it really is personal preference.

Interesting that the FJ 4.0L has a 10k service on 0w20 but the Taco doesn't

I'm gonna pass on the Toyotacare free oil changes with dino and do my own with Amsoil synthetic. I already bought the Amsoil for my Gen I and Lexus prior to necessities requiring I sell those two vehicles. It's just not worth it to drive 40 miles roundtrip for a free oil change and tire rotation. I have everything in my garage right now to do both myself.

I don't like dino when it's -10F, you can hear the valves rattling when you start the truck, and it will be -10F a few times in the next 9 months. Same goes with dino in the trans, xfer case, diffs, I'll put the Amsoil in those also so I don't cringe feeling those inevitable hard shifts at -10.

The BMW 15k service specification is NOT for synthetic oil sold in the US... even Mobil-1 and Amsoil, which are the two best products available to us.

The API standards are not the same as the European standards that the BMW spec is written around.

BMW dealerships may be servicing at 15k, but the oil does not meet spec.

As Whipper said, it's a slightly different engine. The 2008 FJ (which had a similar engine as the Taco) required oil change every 5k. The dual-VVTi FJ engine has a cartridge oil filter, among other differences.

2012 FJ still requires oil change at 5k if you have:
    - Repeated trips of less than five miles in temperatures below 32°F / 0°C:
    - Extensive idling and/or low speed driving for a long distance such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery use:

Since you're a tech can you explain where all these other techs come from that don't know their ass from a hole in the ground? Is it that the individual techs are morons or that the individual dealerships are trying to screw the average joe over?

They are not servicing with off the shelf oil. You can go to the dealer and by the euro spec stuff

^^ What he said. The oil won't break down it will change color due to heat and the cleaning detergents they add in will have basically run their course after a couple thousand miles, which is a reason to add new oil besides carbon build up causing thickening and fuel bypass causing fuel dilution. The filter as stated above is cheap insurance not allowing particulates to get to the oil pump and into the main oil galleries.

Run a used oil analysis and pay the extra for the TBN.
The additive package (TBN number) is pretty much depleted by 10,000.

The good news is, IF you are running bypass filtration and thus running extended drain intervals, then the quart that you add to replace what is lost in the regular filter at 5k and 10k, and the bypass filter at 10k, will be enough to replenish the TBN number.

This is not economical for a normal consumer-level vehicle. The oil analysis with TBN results costs nearly as much as a Mobil-1 oil change and filter.... and without a (somewhat costly) bypass filtration system, and used oil analysis at 10,000 miles, running extended drain intervals beyond 10,000 is flat out stupid, no matter what the oil/filter manufacturer claims.

They are not going to have your back if your engine fails.

    Bingo.

It is a disservice to the members here to simply toss out the 15k interval without that little detail thrown in.

Yea, I think you missed the point though... Regardless of the setup the oil used today is highly unlikely to breakdown at 10k mile mark. Yes it will be used oil but damage the engine, I call b/s. Your gonna have prove that one. I have known family members who have forgotten to put oil back in there vehicle and still have there cars/van go well over 150k miles and not have any knock or engine problems. I personally do my oil changes at 5k because I use the Mobil 1 Clean 5000 with the cleaning agents (that you can smell) that always keeps my engine clean and have a clear diptsick for most of those miles.
