    How about 2,000?

    http://personal.linkline.com/rlockyer/oil/oil.xls

    Those are Blackstone reports from my 2006 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600.
    Mobil-1 and Amsoil 20w50 remained within grade (20w50) quite well, and were just breaking down to the 40wt range at 6,000 miles.

    The non-motorcycle specific automotive oils, as well as the Spectro motorcycle oil were down to 30wt within 2000 miles.

    Surprisingly (or not)... Gastrol GTX (non-synthetic) performed slightly better than Royal Purple.

    This loss of viscosity was not from fuel dilution... you can see that number is well within acceptable ranges and is consistent with the various oils.

    Multi-weight oils are designed to have different weights at different temperatures. That is the whole point of said 5w30 or 0w20. That would only make sense if you used a straight sae 30weight or 20 doesn't matter that is the only viscosity with no added polymers keeping the different weights together.

    What you stated above just means the oil is doing exactly what it was designed to do.

    And keep in mind BMW includes free maintenance for the first 4 years, so there's a very strong incentive for BMW to skimp on the maintenance schedule to save themselves money. As long as the engine fails after the powertrain warranty expires, they are in the clear.

    No, it isn't.

    Those samples are tested by Blackstone at a standard temperature.
    The oil when new rates on the viscosity index at 89 when new (near the bottom of the 50wt spec) and comes back at 69.9 after 1500 miles, which is in the range for a 30wt oil.
    Both of these tests are conducted at 100^C

    The oil (more accurately, it's viscosity improvers) are breaking down.

    A straight 30wt will not show the same degradation.
    Likewise, the wider the ratio between the low and high spec, the worse this degradation becomes.
    10w40 = 1:4
    20w50 = 1:2.5
    5w30 = 1:6

    5100's set at 1.75, 1.5 in. AAL, 265/75/16 Cooper ST tires.
    Thanks for all the replies guys I figure I'll change it myself every other 5000 miles cause I have free life time changes so I'll pay for one and the next time it'll be free and so on should work out pretty nice like that though just gonna mark my filter to make sure to do it

    5k is the Toyota maintenance schedule. It's cheap and safe to do or have done. Maintenance is the key to longevity.

    I too have 2 year FACTORY + 1 year Dealership free maintance on my 2013 TRD Sport, but...just took my truck to the dealership and they too did my oil change--no hassels, no bitch'n, plus I too MARKED my tires and marked my oil filter with a white paint marker. The service guy laughed..but I said..hey- gotta be sure it gets done.
    But, the question still stands...can I use 0-20 on my V-6? Will it harm the engine? I.e rings, skirts, valves. ect.... Please -"...help me obi-wan-kanobi your my only hope..."
