Why does it seem like every 2nd gen Tacoma cost the same?

I just can't believe that the value of an '05 is gonna hold the same value of a 2011 model. Is this really how it's gonna be or are the dealers trying to make me out to be a fool? It seems like for the price of an '08 i might as well pay the extra and get a '11/'12 model. Why even sale a used Tacoma?

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Buy a new one or if you keep your eyes peeled you can get SCREAMIN' deals from private sellers. Check CL, you might be surprised. Base 5 luggers are coming up CHEAP, then you can modify it the way you like. Don't give up. One is out there with your name on it.

Dealer wants you to buy a new one, so they price the used ones high. It's possible to find a used one at a good price, just not at the dealership. I saved at least 10K when I bought mine. It was barely four years old at the time.

    stock, for now
I bought my 05 tacoma for 19,400 OTD..OE sticker in the window was around $25,000. I asked myself the same thing, why buy used when i can get brand new for a few thousand more.. All comes down to what you can afford.

Keep searching for used! Don't become "car poor" buying a new one if that's not absolutely what you want to do.

If you find one within a few thousand of your price range, go haggle! Tell the dealer exactly what you want to spend and say you will not go any higher. Usually they just wanna get the used stuff off the lot.

    Good luck

If that's true, in my opinion, you may not be able to truly afford it. A new one would have cost me 400 a month for five years. It was simply too much. I would have been unable to SAVE money for five whole years. So I bought used. So far I've been happy with that decision. Not having a payment on a truck that is still under 60K miles and will likely make 160K is really nice.

If you are like me and know exactly what you want down to the color you should probably buy new. I found my perfect truck on CL, but unfortunatly it was scracthed all to hell and the interior was awful. Have not seen anything remotely good for months. For 2-4 thousand more why buy used?

A friend of mine just bought a Taco that is 4 years and 65K miles "new" for $20K
I bought a brand new Taco in the color I wanted with a 3 year warranty and < 50 miles for $30K. I'll gladly sell him mine in 4 years for $20K - these buggers do hold their value.

Well, i'm giving up. I'm not gonna give up a fourth of my monthly income for just a truck. Ill just have to get a frontier or a crappy Z71.

Eta: not to mention no matter the price, $20k to $30k, i will be paying the same price a month give or take 30 to 60 bucks.

No vehicle holds there value by that much and whoever your dealing with is trying to rip you off. Look around more and you should be able to find a better deal.

^^ This was my logic as well. Looked at used ones for a long time and realized that for about 30% more, I could get a brand new one that, in 4-5 years, would only depreciate 30-35%, even if I put 75K+ miles on it. For me, that was tough to argue with. But, as it's been said, it all comes down to what you can afford - never bite off more you can chew

But when payments are only 30 to 60 bucks apart, mainly because of the APR, it makes it even more annoying when trying to decide. I would go even older to the first gen but those are hard to find. I dont want to pay formsomething i already own. I have a '00 silverado and i drive 120 miles to work. 60there/60back. It has 190k miles. Its time for an upgrade but if i go older than what im lookin for, ill be back to where i'm at now. Im also trying to build credit. This will be my first real big purchase and im trying not to get screwed while im doing it.

Yeah there is a pretty good deal of difference in the interest rate between new and used. Most of the time it equals out to get the new one rather than settle for a color you didn't want just cause it appeared to be cheaper. I was going to go used till I saw what they were going for. I decided hell with it, it was cheaper to buy new than used.

There's no interest on making payments to yourself now.

What sized payment CAN you afford? if it's 250 then do that. make 250 dollar payments toward your future truck every month, when you find the one you want, your down payment will be that much bigger and you will have smaller payments than you wanted. I did that and got the truck I want, now I'm making "house payments". I don't want or need one yet and cannot foresee when I ever will, but, I'm paying for it now anyways, so I don't have to later. Just a thought

I hear ya. If you can shrug off that extra $30-$60 from your monthly budget and not stretch things too far, it seems to make even more sense to go new.

When I made the decision to go new, I set a price in my head that I was willing to pay and walked away from two dealerships that weren't willing to meet that price. Third time was the charm and the dealership I bought from actually traded with one of the first two dealers to get the truck I wanted. But, for full disclosure, I was only willing to negotiate selling price, not APR, as mine will be paid off before the first monthly bill arrives.

Either way, stick to your guns on what you want to pay and don't get caught up in the "excitement" of buying a new truck. :D
