Exactly right. Oil is a publicly traded commodity on a world market. Everything world wide affects prices. I watch them throughout the day as I am active in the stock market, though I don't touch commodities (too scary), and as soon as news breaks overseas, oil prices react accordingly. It's just the nature of the beast. If you want to blame someone, blame OPEC first.

Full disclosure: I am certainly no Obama fan.

Oil is traded worldwide, but have you noticed that recent "threats" made by Iran are not making the price of oil rise like it usually does? I'm wondering why that is.

I recently spent $3.52 per gallon on a recent fill-up. That's the lowest that it has been here in California since a dip in December 2011 and before that February 2011.

 

Gas has went up about 10 cents here in the past week.

 

Yup.

Filled up last week at $3.93 and the same station was $3.98 Wednesday.

Still at $1.359

 

Gas is up .35 in the past week around here.

If gas prices are going up that kind of kills the theory doesn't it. Oh maybe the other side is raising it.

 

^Very true, however, it's going up due to international issues, namely, the threat from Iran. We have no wsent more military assets to the Strait of Hormuz in direct response to Irans threat to close it. The POTUS has very little to due with oil prices, which was also my point when everyone was blaming Bush.

 

EXACTLY! World markets drive this particular commodity. Plainly and simply a function of the supply and demand curve.

Well I don't agree with you George. The more money they print out of thin air the less the dollar is worth and the higher the price goes. That's the price of everything of course. Also everything is manipulated these days. It's almost as if there is no more free market. Even interest rates are manipulated, just check the LIBOR scandal. Trillions stolen and the Fed and our gov knew about it for years. And it's as if no one even cares???

I can't stand paying this much for gas and rarely take any extra trips anywhere. Growing up I used to take rides just to take one. I love cruising around. Now I might take the long way home from a necessary drive but no longer cruise. But I will take the prices of today over the prices of tomorrow when China finally succeeds at knocking the U.S. dollar from reserve currency status.

They have been working on this for a while now and it will happen because of our stupidity at acquiring massive, unsustainable, debt. Everyone wants a handout and it's only delaying the pain. When we lose our currency status gas will be closer to $10 a gallon. Food and everything associated with gas will be very expensive and there will be riots in the streets. Not to be all gloom and doom but Rome is burning.

corn is going up too. Is that because of the Fed as well? No, it's a supply demand issue, like the price of oil.
