So im looking at a truck a friend has at his car lot. He owns the place so he cut me a pretty good deal. about 5k off of local price.

Its an 06 double cab log box with 94000km (58,000 miles) Paint is in good shape other than a scuff on the front bumper and some minor scratches here and there.

Interior will need a good clean but is in otherwise good shape.

    Clean title, One owner.

There are a few things that worry me about it:

It shifts hard from 2nd to 3rd.

Its been in the woods a fair amount, its not all banged up or anything but you can tell by the under body its seen some mud etc.

The suspension feels a bit bagged ( I will be putting 5100's all around though)

Needs a muffler (straight piped right now and sounds awful)

It was owned by a younger guy who clearly drove it like a truck.

Would you buy it or stear clear?

I'd be a little concerned about the shifting and would want to go through it with a fine tooth comb but what's the price and can you do your own repairs if necessary?

Yeah it would come down to the price.

I had a friend that bought a subaru off a "car lot" well a few hundred miles later the transmission basically exploded. The lot did cover the costs of a new one after an arm and a leg....

Does the truck come with any kind of warranty? I know some lots will give you like a "3 month 3k miles warranty" or something like that. Some even offer extended warranties.

Why are you wanting a new truck if you don't mind me asking?

The cost would be 15,500 which is dirt cheap up here. Anything even close to this milage etc is aroound 23k.

Im just waiting to hear back from him about the warranty.

I dont do as much serious off roading anymore and would like something I can take more people/stuff in. Will still miss the 1st gen though.

Definitely depends on the warranty I would say and how long/what it covers.

Also how long did you test drive it for? Ask him to take it on an extended test drive. We almost bought a Mustang for my brother and when we asked to sales men if we could take it up a grade that was about 30-40 minutes away he said no and then finally agreed to come with us. Well the car didn't even make it to the hill

I did take it for a good long test drive and everything was great exept for the noisy exhaust and tansmission shifting hard.

He said a 3 month 3000k warranty would be 300 extra.

Definitely address the shifting problem if you do sign papers. And if you have pictures post them up, Maybe we can spot something that you missed that should also be addressed.

The shifting issue is the only that that worries me. If you can save 5k on a truck and have to put 1k in to replacing suspension and exhaust it sounds like you came out ahead thought. Just get that big issue resolved before driving away

I'd try to get them to fix the shifting issue. It could be as simple as a fluid change (incorrect transmission fluid level could be the culprit).

I made an appt with toyota and am getting the whole truck checked out. The warranty covers any motor and transmission problem. It comes with unlimited claims and the toyota dealer says they are a good dealer to buy from so I should be covered if anything comes up.

They also have all service records for the truck and say it hasnt been in for any sort of diagnostic on the transmission problem so it could be something minor.

I think I'll be ok as long as I get the warranty.

as far as price goes that is a steal for a tacoma. heck mine is an 06 4x4 with 70k and i paid 20k for it, but then again the only owner before me was a grandpa. like they said before definately make sure the 100k/7 year warranty is still good, even though it runs out next january. or at least thats what toyota offered me as a warranty.

Buy it, if you don't like how it drives then sell it for a profit.

I'd be worried about the shifting issue, other than that it seems like a good deal.
