2012 Gear Ratio questions/buying questions and a lot of blabbing.

Quick intro,

New member but long time car/truck lover.

Former vehicles:
1990 Honda CRX w/ cammed b18b engine swap.
2001 Civic LX autoX car.
2002 Tacoma TRD lifted locked and armored
2006 Civic Si 240whp
2004 V8 4runner lifted on 32's.

Current: 2012 VW GLI Slammed on Miro 111's.
Current: 1992 2 door Toyota 4runner (stock).

I have loved Toyota trucks for age's, especially my 2004 V8 and regret selling it for the GLI, hence the '92.

I am tossing around the idea of a 2012 Tacoma, but am having an insanely hard time getting over the fact Toyota will only give me ~20,000 for my 2012 GLI with 6000 KM's. I bought it new for 29,000.

That being said I am quite convinced if I get the right deal I would make the move. If not I will wait (hopefully) for the newer more power and fuel efficient engines in the 2014 model.

I have a few things on my list for the new truck.

V6
Access Cab or short box quad cab.

I am 27 with no kids and a GF, so no kids in sight but I do like the idea of a quad cab.

I love the rear seat room on my VW, but I think in the 10 months I have owned the car it has only been used 4 times.

I love the 2012's new front and interior, so I would only buy a 2012+.

I also prefer the plain black plastic interior of the base over the tacky as hell silver trim of the SR5/TRD's. The VW has spoiled me with REAL metal trim throughout.

I also prefer the base model's black fender flares, a throwback to my old '02.

But conversly I like the options of the SR5: LED tails, backup cam, and just general immenities. I also cannot BELIEVE Toyota has the balls to sell a $27,000 CDN (base V6 manual access cab) truck without cruise or intermittant wipers.

On topic again (whew), I saw a stunning 2012 Black base Access Cab V6 Auto for 29,605 CDN. This is a great prices as nearly any V6 2012 is over 30 locally.

The truck comes with dinky 245/75/16's and I am wondering the the gearing is the same as the SR5/TRD sport's 265/65/17's or the OR's 265/75/16's.

The first mod i would do would be a 5100 1.75" lift to pair with the stock Canadian market TSB rear springs, accompanied by a set of 265/76/16's.

I made the mistake on my '02 of putting on big tires without gearing and it KILLED the truck for me. I would hate to make the same mistake on a new truck.

Are all gear ratio's the same?

Auto and manual for the base and the higher trimmed trucks?

I have google'd and cant find to much info online regarding the gearing of 2012 tacoma's.

And unbore you from the novel I just wrote, some car porn from my previous cars.

2002 TRD 33's.1" BL. Icon Coils. Deaver 8 leaf rear.

2004 V8. 2.5" lift. Spidertrax. 265/70/17's.

Current Cars
2012 VW GLI 6 Speed. KW Coils. Mirco 111 Wheels.
1992 4Runner 2 door

you think grey is tacky?

i'm pretty sure all 4x4 gearing stock is the same.

get a V6 and auto. you won't/will barely notice a power difference with the 265s on there

.
Man ... you would be taking a bath on the VW GLI ($1.50 CDN per KM) ... good luck in what you do.

PS ... I love your town of Vancouver ... landed a float plane on the water there once.

Hey, Welcome from Langley. Check out the Vancouver thread. We have trail runs and tims meetup's regulary.

To be honest, id go with a automatic. Theres pluses and minuses to both but if you plan on offroading, the tacoma's have a great auto tranny for it. I think stock gear ratio is 3.73 for all models. You can get 285/75/16 on 3'' lift.

Also double cab really comes in handy, im in process of upgrading mine to one. There is absoutly no leg room in the back and the jump seats are too narrow.

If you plan on mod'n, id go with a base model too, put the money towards real features suspension, air/lockers, armor.
