HAH!! I have not *said this to someone. Yet.

I will totally (and always have) give people a wave or smile, who are driving (or riding) vehicles they obviously have put a ton of work into. I haven't been flipped off yet in response but this may also be bc I'm not a dude. :)

It's not an issue of more class... it's an issue of when the population of your city is greater than some countries, you can't know everyone and wave to everyone you encounter.
When someone waves to you, you may not even see them because you aren't looking.

Rural areas (away from interstates) are different. You can and do know everyone, and when a stranger passes through, there's a good chance that they are going to be looking in the direction of the only other human within a mile or two.

Around here I only notice bikers waving to each other. Sometimes I find myself trying to wave to them from inside the cage:)

Hmm, I wonder if the Rice Krispies Impala waves to the Captain Crunch one?

I wave at WRX/STi owners in my taco, sometimes I forget I'm not driving the subie anymore. But I do get a wave back. I also like to wave to hot chicks in their cars. I do get nasty looks but I always get at least one smile.

That was one that was always on my "You know you've been riding too long when...."

...you break your hand on the cage's window trying to wave to a biker.
...your cage's roof has a dent above the door from you doing the "cop tap"
    ...etc

That's what I was saying... stranger passing through, you're going to notice each other even if you don't know each other.

Crowded road with 3 lanes in each direction and some guy in a nondescript vehicle going the other way waves... even if you see it, you're likely to assume that he's waving to the guy in front of you or behind you because he knows them.
    If you see it.
