TOB Longterm results...??

Hello all,

I have an 05 access cab trd 6spd and my truck has the clutch chirping that is associated with the throwout bearing wearing on the input shaft. I have called about having the service done and where I am out of warranty they want to charge me around 800. I am debating on getting it done at Toyota or trying to find a spot that I can do it myself. Before I go ahead with the TSB I would like to know if anyone here has any long term results from having this fix done on their own truck. I have read thread after thread about people changing out throw out bearings only to have the chirping come back in 5-10k miles but I have not read about the results from anyone putting any kind of mileage on their truck with the other components that go with the TSB (Bearing, Fork Support and release cylinder that have been revised by Toyota.) My other option is to install the URD sleeve kit but I haven't found much information from folks who have gone that route either.

Any input is greatly appreciated, the clutch has been chirping since I became the new owner a few months ago and has not changed or gotten worse but I still want to address this in the near future to avoid a bigger problem that might occur.

The design of the throw out bearing assembly used on Toyota trucks can cause uneven wear on the aluminum shaft that the throw out bearing rides back and forth on. The release fork can cause side loading of the bearing as it rides back and forth on the shaft and that can cause uneven wear. When this occurs the throw out bearing becomes loose and can rock back and forth, bind and can cause excessive noise. This sleeve repair kit consists of a precision machined aluminum sleeve that is pressed onto the stock aluminum shaft and is anchored with the included set screws. A new OEM Toyota bearing that has been modified to fit over the sleeve is included. Special water proof grease is provided to ensure smooth operation of the new bearing on the stainless sleeve.

They sound confused as to what they are selling?

its a stainless steele sleeve, probably just a fuck up. but its stainless steel

So it seems like the sleeve kit is my best approach. But the other parts addressed in the tsb are supposed to slightly change the angle that the fork contacts the bearing. I remember reading that somewheres. The sleeve kit won't change anything other than the tob. Would it be wise to install the urd kit along with the other parts from the tsb or would that be overkill?

no such thing as overkill :P

i dont see how it would hurt to install both.

I've had my URD sleeve / bearing installed for about 15 months and 20,000 km. Nothing but good to say, but not exactly long term, the real results will be available in a few years IMHO. The sleeve is indeed stainless steel, much more wear resistant than the OE alum stub. Lifetime warranty on the sleeve, one year on their bearing.

My understanding of the TSB parts is that they changed the geometry to reduce the sideways pressure of the bearing against the stub.

I was in your shoes before the TSB was introduced, it came out the week I ordered the URD kit. After pricing out the TSB parts, I was still happy with my decision to go the
URD route. TSB parts ran over $500 IIRC, so with labour I'm doubting your $800 quote really was the TSB version, or them just throwing in another release bearing same you have now.

I thought that was a bit cheap for everything. I think I will end up going the urd route. Did you install yourself or have it done? And either way, how long did it take or how much was it approximately? If you don't mind me asking.

I have about 30K miles on the URD sleeve/bearing. No more chirpping for me and I think he made the clutch feel easier. Anyways, I installed it myself and it was pain in the ass by myself. Just make sure you have a transmission-jack and you will be much better off. I didnt and it slowed me down a lot. Overall, so glad I did it right in the first place.

I installed it myself, took me about 6 hours in my driveway on my 4x4, with no real hurrying. That said, I'm a mechanic by trade with tools to match. If you're more the backyard DIY type with moderate mechanical skills, you should be able to pull it off in less than a weekend with no issue. Have some long extensions on hand for the top belhousing bolts, and get ahold of a tranny jack or if you have a good floor jack, get a tranny cradle that fits it.

Had mine in for 25K miles or so with a stage 2 clutch without issue. Anything from URD is good stuff maynerd.

Just installed mine..

Threw my URD TOB kit on yesterday. I was having all the classic symptoms with the squeaky clutch, etc. You can see in the first picture how the shaft is scored. The second picture is with the new steel sleeve installed, and the third is everything installed. Currently only have the $225 invested into this repair, so if I can finish at that I'll be pumped.

I'll have it all back together Wednesday, and then I'll be able to see if it fixed the issue. As far as long term, my fingers are crossed. I've had good luck with URD products before; I'm pretty confident this one will hold up fine

Thanks for the Pics! how long did it take you to drop the trans? what tools did you have? (shop with lift, transmission jack, strong friend to bench press the trans.. ect..) Keep us posted when you get it all back together and test it out!

Just got her out of the shop last night. No more squeaking, no more chirping, and the clutch pedal operation is MUCH smoother and has way less resistance.

As far as the swap, it was kind of a pain. This was my first time dropping a transmission, but luckily I'm military and have access to the 'do it yourself' garage on post. They have just about every tool, bays with lifts, and folks to help if you get stuck on something. It took about 12hrs total. Hardest part was getting to the 2 bolts on top of the transmission (had to tilt back the tranny/engine and go along the top of the transmission with some long extensions). Overall pretty straight forward though; I only really used the ol' Haynes manual for torque values.

I also swapped the transmission fluid for Redline MT90, changed out the rear differential fluid for Redline 75w90(w 4oz of the additive), and threw in a URD short throw shift kit while I was at it.

Really happy with the results. Shifting is improved in every way. Cost about $500 for all the URD parts, fluids, and bay rental, but I know I'm going to have this truck for a while and consider it well worth it.

Just got mine back yesterday from the shop. I would have liked to have done it myself but I don't have the time or a good place to do it. And I got a good deal on the install.

Can't believe how much better the clutch is now. Taking off is so much smoother, the whole truck would shudder before, not to mention no more terrible squeaking noise when the clutch is out!

Next on my transmission to do list is to change out the fluid for redline. And in the rear end as well... All part of this never ending project.
